I don't care for them but my husband insists on them so I am stuck with them. I have found some nice ones out there. I rarely see them on Houzz if that tells you anything.

we have them in our bedrooms, but not in other rooms. i have an attractive well made stand fan that i use once in a while when one room is warm but i dont want to run the a/c.

the bedroom ceiling fans are turned on all summer and make it possible to skip a/c some days.

i DO wish that some clever company would make fan housings which are easily removable at the end of summer with just some sort of cover so you could take them down.

We love ceiling fans. In our Fl home we have them in every room but the dinning room. But...... We do not have the light kits attached. This makes all the difference. One barley notices them sans those ugly lights hanging down. Also.... Cannot beat the electricity savings!

Depends on your needs, agree better without light attached, you can have them for function but make them inconspicuous. We only have one on our porch and recently added one to master bedroom. I love having it in the bedroom!

If you need them, there are some very nice ones out there. Where I live, there is no question as to whether we should have one! I cannot imagine going through summer without fans....

I really don't like attaching the light, but husband thinks those should be there, too. Stinker

Hate, hate, hate ceiling fans! That said, I have four of them. One in each bedroom and one in LR. I have vaulted ceilings and none of the fans have lights. Husband loves them. The things we do (or put up with) for love...

In our climate, we save a lot of money on a/c by using a ceiling fan in the bedroom. We once bought a house that had fans over the eating areas and never used them because all they do is cool the food. Couldn't wait to get rid of them.

i would die without my fan over the bed. I have one in the family room too so I don't have to run the AC constantly. no lights on them. just try and pick something stylish and not so "1985".

I live in the tropics and would never be without ceiling fans - they are even used sometimes in our 'winter'. I have them in every room except the bathrooms and laundry and really don't even notice they are there. If having ceiling fans is beneficial to your everyday comfort because of the area you live and you choose not to have them, than that is your decision. I would never put the aesthetics of a room ahead of personal comfort. I had fans with led lights installed in our screened room recently and love them. Some new models are very stylish with flush fitting lights which emit a surprising amount of light.

If you live in a hot climate, they are extremely useful. And once you get away from the big box stores and their awful tulip-light fans, you can find a lot of nice ones. I have this one in my bedroom and it is totally silent.

I live in a very hot, dry area and I will never do without ceiling fans in all the rooms. There are many beautiful fans out there that move a lot of air and are quiet. I agree about omitting the lights, although I have them in the extra bedrooms.

I love ceiling fans but you should consult a professional lighting company about the lights issue. The lights on ours have the bowl shape that spreads light upward instead of the kind that hang down and let a light bulb shine in your eyes.. Important too is how much your fan and light can drop from the ceiling to avoid a strobe effect.

Even with AC, a fan is great for 2nd story bedrooms, and general air circulation.

I love them and don't really care whether they're in style or not. For those in cold climates, they are very useful in winter too. Reverse the direction so they blow up on a low speed. This helps push the warm air down the walls and warm a room more evenly, which saves heating bills. They're wonderful in all seasons.

The house I'm working on has ceiling fans in the two main floor bedrooms but only one has a light kit. So, the back bedroom currently has no light at all. I don't particularly care for ceiling fans but they will stay until we get moved in, central air installed and spend a couple seasons in the house. I prefer fresh air to a/c so I expect the ceiling fans will be a benefit.

Thank you all for the input. I think we are all in the same camp-- we love what a fan does, but not necessarily the way it looks. We live in S AL, so comfort is def an issue. I think fans it is!!!

I hate the aesthetics and I hate how they can blow down on your head -- my pet peeve. But we're getting them installed with our reno (more up to date versions, no more ugly 1980s fans) because after living here awhile we realize they are a very much a necessary evil for proper circulation and comfort.

Also in Boston like nnigrt, On a top floor. Our last place was shady bottom floor... didn't need fans at all. But also didn't get much sunlight. Trade off.
