There are all kinds of quartz products that look just like marble, but are maintenance free.

go with your first instinct the marble would look amazing in there. can you live with imperfections? does everything have to be shiny? I think the marble would play nicely with your well exposure, which is amazing!!

There is also ceramic tile that mimics marble - for the backsplash

HI -- Marble has been used in kitchens for a very long time . You want marble then get it . Just know how you have to care for it and any marks over time is called patina and that is not a bad thing . The marble over time will get a luster to it that adds character and charm . Yes there is Quartz and that is no care and it can look almost the same . So it depends on how you use the counters .

Quartz countertop in a white/cream then glass backsplash to go with green glass floor.

Cambria quartzite would look awesome and comes in a lot of variety. I would put it on the counters and backsplash.

Thank you all so very much for your suggestions! I'm overwhelmed by how much help I've gotten from HOUZZ. My house is looking great thanks to people like you that take the time to read and comment on other people's dilemmas such as myself. I'm glad to see that a lot of replies agreed that I should go for marble or something similar. This means I'm learning a little bit too thanks to all the photos I flick through on HOUZZ between 4 and 6 every morning!
I also like the idea of a glass backsplash, in fact I had just looked at some photos this morning. So thanks for that suggestion too. As for the well, here's a few pictures of it prior to us discovering it and after the excavation before putting in the glass flooring. We were told it's about 400 yrs old. The ceiling to it is curved as its sitting on top of arches. Enjoy

That is really awesome!!!! I love things like this. when was your home built? I noticed it the pictures that the integrity of the well due to its age is a little at risk. Are y'all planning on contacting an expert to preserve it?

Hello Tammy thanks for your comment. Not sure what it is in the pictures that's making you question the integrity of the well. Could it be the shadows from the lighting? We did bring an architect over to inspect it and since it was buried for a large number of years it has been very well preserved. I'm attaching a few more photos for you taken in daylight thus without so many shadows. Thank you again for your time!

is there water under the stone ? Looks great by the way ....I have a 40ft well in my back garden that is spring feed

Wow 40ft! That's a big well! This well is only 13ft deep, 3x4 meters wide and has about 2.5ft of water. I do however have another well in the yard not far from this one. Not sure how deep or big that one is though. We sealed that one as its location was in the passage. Thanks again for your comment.

You know another though would be to do a glass countertop and travertine in the same color as your well stones for the backsplash. It would add a period look to it that would be keeping with your well

Something like the below would tie in the floors to the countertops.

I would go with the color that is in the well stone. It's a bit warmer and would tie it in. Something rustic like remnant granite tile with the ruff side exposed.

Perhaps soapstone or calacatta marble.

Gulullu I was referring mostly to the mortar in between the stones. This is such an awesome thing to have discovered and I'm so proud you are making it a feature in your home.

Haven't thought of soapstone actually. Not sure if I'll find it out here but worth giving it a try. I also thought about something that matches the stone color but I'm thinking there might be too much of the same color in that room. I also love the stainless mosaic tiles, never seen anything like that before. They're gorgeous!
@ Tammy: I'm attaching a few pictures of the moment we discovered the well. Back then they didn't have cement of course, so they used to fill the in between the stones with dirt. We're the ones that cleaned it up, cemented the gaps (to stop bugs seeping through the dirt) and made it look the way it is today. Thanks again for your comment.

Wow! Have you considered a granite quartzite. Something with a watery flow and hints or greens/grays/beige? Pick up on the green in your glass and well colors.

Oh wow! That's the kind of backsplash I've been looking for! I hadn't checked granite yet so I wasn't aware it was so beautiful and that it looked so much like marble. Thank you for attaching the picture. Makes it easier for me to explain what I'm after when I'm shopping around. Many thanks.

Soapstone with a little green it!

Looked up soapstone but there's none here. Will ask regardless. I love soapstone. I own two plates we had bought from The States. Had no idea there were counter tops! Thanks for your suggestion.

I would try to mimic the stone from the well and the other walls, I see that they are chunky and sand stone color, you've added the kitchen over the well, not the well under the kitchen, go with it
