Whirlpool - Model # WFW8740DW

OK - I am getting down to the wire. :) so this is only available at lowes. is that bad?

it is tier 1 - good right? I keep hearing about how people wished there was more water in the cycles.

it has a heater. not certified allergen, but I think with the steam, now that I understand it more, that will be ok (why did I not come here years ago - i have had a steam machine for 10 years and never used it once!)

http://www.lowes.com/pd/Whirlpool-Duet-4-3-cu-ft-High-Efficiency-Stackable-Front-Load-Washer-with-Steam-Cycle-White/50194411

there is only 1 in our local store - should I snatch it up?

If you get the Lowes extended warranty, it starts after the manufacturers ends. My LG is now covered for 6 years and Lowes will replace a unit deemed not fixable even 5 or 6 years old.

thanks chickemama. :) Iam really making myself nuts. DH doesnt want a local shop (I do and I think could convince him) and I also found this maytag....

    maytag

I can't seem to find any reviews on this because it is discontinued.

Wow, I didn't come across that one in my searches!

As for local store, what level of service can they offer? It seems that the large chain stores are more able to absorb the cost of making a customer happy.

    I'd go for it too.

LG & Samsung I still hear/read part issues, early failures, service issues.

Even though Maytag is owned by Whirlpool the Maytag line (washers) have some issues.

I can't get the Lowes site right now as they seem to be updated it. (who updates a web site in the middle of the day).

Noticed you linked to Sohns -- there are other retailers in the area that may have a better selection.

ABT shows the WFW87HEDW with the internal heater but no allergen. At least that will give a hot wash. On the Whirlpool site it's shown as Tier II.

Whirlpool's site never states whether the machine has/doesn't have an internal heater so best to verify (any why I like abt),

    WFW87HEDW on Whirlpool

But that one looks like a good bet if you can get it.

If 8740 discontinued and only the Tier is the difference (apart from price of course).

Interesting thing about the ABT description. The "Details" tab shows the table of information and there it states the machine is a tier II, yet further down in the text portion, it states that it is tier III.

hmm for the lowes specific one whirlpool says it is a tier 1 lowes exclusive

now we are waiting on a new closing date so I am keeping fingers crossed they dont sell the 1 they have left while that sorts out today.

I do like the maytag too I think, but they only have 1 left too! is there a local hudson valley place you would recommend rococogurl?

the Walden store is not too far from me. I checked Michaels in Middletown too, but they did not have a huge selection either.

    last modified: 10 years ago

    Lowe's may have an exclusive that's T1.

@boop - Michaels is where I bought the washer, dryer & fridge. They are good but I was using them for Miele which has independent service.

Before I had things brought up from the city (mistake).

Here's a place in Fishkill you might try. Automatic Appliance -- they seem to have a lot of washers (but I haven't been there). I'm always surprised how often stuff turns up in Fishkill.

It appears that the WFW8740DW is discontinued so you may not find too many more of them. Whirlpool does list it as Tier I on their website as does Lowe's. Lowe's states that you can select your rinse temp, though, and I highly doubt that since most washers only seem to have a cold-water rinse. Personally, I have a Duet and love it.

Here's something I already posted on another thread, but this time I'll make it clear I'm talking about abt.com. I just asked for front load washers without a water heater. Among the many results that clearly do have a heater is the Miele W3048. You know what's worse than a site with bad info? A site that lets you filter results by the bad info. Maybe ajmadison.com is better.

The thing is, on the Internet you can have a site that seems good for research and appears authoritative, but contains information that isn't 100% reliable. Someone cared enough to set up a good user interface, which will be around forever. But then it's handed to someone else to keep it up to date, and they may drop the ball.

I just went through both abt and ajmadison web sites and searched for different features related to front loaders and both sites showed inconsistent results. On the ajmadison site when I searched the front loaders with heaters the Electrolux compact 20SQ didn't come up as a result. When I searched on abt, as @suburbanmd did above, I got the same error he did.

One more frustration in the search for the perfect machine for you: completely inconsistent information between various websites....

if you are hoping for a rebate from your local water company because you're buying a teir X machine I would definitely check their website before proceeding.

You all are so helpful! For us, we have well water here. another delay in our closing. the buy on our place - the bank forgot some IRS form. Grrrr. DH doesn't want to purchase a washer till we are all clear to close. Understandably i guess. so now I have to hope that one of these places still has either the maytag of the whirlpool left when we finally get it!

darn it. the whirpool is gone.

Just keep looking around, Boop. When I switched from Tier I to Tier II, I still managed to have clean clothes. The cycles may take a little longer but it feels good to know my water usage is lower.

It's a shame that one manufacturer owns several others now. I don't trust Maytag after I had so much trouble with mine, but knowing they are owned by Whirlpool and others, what is a person to do? I am so tired of crappy washers that I have to replace every three years...if I am lucky to keep them that long.

Maybe it is just my luck. Other people I talk to don't have any trouble out of their machines.

Where do you live? At Nebraska Furniture Mart there is a Whirlpool Duet. Omaha, NE

I had my last washer 9 years. It died (well, maybe it could be fixed,) on a sunday. the next day I found out we were moving. it started making a really loud noise and when I opened it serious amounts of smoke came out and the alarms went off. :( anyway - I found and ordered the lowes exclusive above. i was so happy to find one.

So we delayed having it delivered until we moved and I went to measure the pedestals to be sure they would work in the new house and while I was doing that I noticed that the price went down $300 for the washer and dryer. turns out the pedestals do not work and I got the price match of $640 (with tax) credited back.

    Thanks to you all !!!

I think I got the best set in my price range with the features I wanted for a fabulous price ($599 each) they are arriving on Monday!

On a side note - they could be wrong - but the extended warranty is not additive to the time as mentioned above. they said it covers other things, so runs in parallel to the manufacturer warranty.

We have been without a washer for almost two weeks and I will be so glad when we have one again.

Is that the one that does not have sanitize?

Mama, The WFW8740DW does have a Sanitize cycle, but it does not have an Allergen cycle.

Boopadaboo-I have still been considering this machine versus the LG 3670. Please keep us updated.

Read that machine well...does it say Sanitize with Oxi? If so than you won't get the high temps. Is it a certified sanitize?

It is not Sanitize with Oxi. It has steam and says it eliminates 99.9% of common bacteria, but it does not say it is NSF certified.

My Duets sanitize says the same thing, yet it only uses tap hot and the heater does not engage to heat the water. What it does if I choose steam is...after its done washing it drains the water than steams for awhile. Theres no way it can steam hot or long enough to reach sanitizing temps....I have checked this many times. And had service check it. Also Allergen is around 131F if its not certified for that temp its not certified for higher sanitize temps.

I tell you this because sanitizing temps are important to some and I think Whirlpool is playing a game with us.

Hmm interesting - how would you know mamapinkyO - does yours have the towels cycle too?

OK it says towels does not use the extra hot water temp. MamapinkyO are you saying when you use the extra hot setting and you have tested the water temp somehow it is not hot enough to really kill allergens even though this says it wlll? that is what it sounds like, which is certainly a bummer. which model do you have?

this is what this one says.....

Clothing, bedding, Sanitize Extra Hot Extra Fast Extra Heavy Clean Boost This cycle eliminates 99.99% of the most common bacteria ™ found in clothes, sheets, and towels. The extra hot wash temperature ensures
    sanitization. Check
    recommended wash
    temperature of your items.
    Bacteria tested were
    K. pneumonia, P. aureginosa,
    and S. aureus.

Yes I do have the towels cycle.......I read somewhere can't remember where that the newer Duets like the one your interested in has no allergen or sanitize cycle but does have a labeled cycle for them.

My sanitize doesn't work but my allergen gets up to at least 154F. And my heavy duty cycle is at least 138F.

Towels I can't remember I'll have to test again but i think its only tap hot.

Oy that will certainly be a bummer, I am not so sure it is a newer model though. it says it is Tier 1 and discontinued and I think some of the comments on it go back 3-4 years. I am going to do more digging!

Than you are probably good to go ..just double check.

Well, totally did not follow the lead here and am now bummed. This washer and dryer wont fit! luckily I caught it tonight and they did not bring them out here. They were supposed to be delivered tomorrow. Good thing I didnt end up getting it set up in the old house for a few weeks (would have fit fine there)

So now I have to figure out what will fit, that has a heater, is decent, not costing a fortune that has the greatest capacity.

Oh and how much depth do you need to leave behind the washer and dryer? I have read different things :( Kind of frustrated to start all over again, but glad that I didn't end up with them here not fitting. :)

I believe that the LG3670 is not as deep as the Duets. I still haven't decided between the two.

Boop - the Whirlpool Duet Pinky has is the WP95. Before making decisions based on a model you aren't considering, make sure to check the manufacturers website. The WP95 doesn't have an extra hot water option. Steam is part of the sanitize cycle and there is a light that comes on when the steam function kicks in. I know this because I also have the WP95. Pinky stuck a thermometer in the load and got a temperature reading. I haven't. I also live in Phoenix, AZ where both the cold tap and hot tap can be hot, lol. Our house is also equipped with a hot water circulation pump that insures we have hot water coming out almost immediately. In some climates, I'm pretty sure there is a lag between a hot water cycle and actual hot water to the tune that water in the drum might be considerably cooler than wanted. Some washers may be equipped with a device that heats or cools the water to a specific temp before pouring it into the drum. If I lived in a colder climate or had reason to need a guaranteed hot water temp, I don't know what purchase parameters I would really use. As it is, I use the Allergen cycle on my washer, along with Sanitize, Heavy Duty, cold-water wash, quick wash and just about every other option it provides, including towels. If I'm washing dirty rag type towels, I'll use the heavy duty cycle but if I'm washing bath towels used to dry clean bodies, I'll use the towel cycle. I still believe a Sanitize cycle is relying on use of chlorine bleach rather than extra hot wash water to kill germs but when I use that cycle, I also know the hot water circulation pump is pouring hot water into the drum. In our area, we are plenty water conscious and try to make sure we aren't wasting a very, very precious resource in the low desert. To watch the electricity, that circulation pump is also on a switch.

    You look at Electrolux?

I did, thank you for bringing it up rococogurl. I think they are all too deep. On one site I think they had it categorized wrong and I thought for a bit it would work, then I looked at the specs and it was too deep. Unless of course you go with the compact, which I really would prefer not to do. (or I missed something)

    thank you moroseaz too.

I have decided to go with the LG 4270. I think if I read this correctly it means that if I use the sanitary cycle it should be certified - what I don't know is if that means that it will kill allergens too. • 9 years ago

Certified heat sanitizing is somewhere in the 150F range...certified heat allergen temp is 131F so if its certified to reach sanitizing temps it will kill allergins.

"Some washers may be equipped with a device that heats or cools the water to a specific temp before pouring it into the drum."

I don't know of any washing machine with that functionality. They can work only with the water that comes out of the supply taps, and have no control of it until after it gets to inlet valves, into the machine. None of them route the water flow to the drain, instead of into the drum, until it reaches the desired input temperature. No washer has a refrigeration capability to cool tap-cold water if it's higher than the target cold-setting temperature, or in some cases nowadays higher than the warm-setting temperature.

certified sanitary cycle is marketing. allergen certification is the one that's verifiable (short version). but if the machine has an internal heater it should be ok.

some of us have compact machines. depends on need/usage. i do king sheets in my compact.

Some washers have a sanitize cycle that reaches temps of between 150&160 F....so its natural if you buy a machine that has a sanitize cycle to expect this. Than when the manual states that this cycle eliminates 99.99% of most common bacteria found in towels, sheets, and clothes and that the hot wash temperature ensures sanitization....only to find that the heater does not engage to heat the wash water to sanitizing temps is IMO a lie. My manual does not say the steam does the sanitizing it says the hot wash temps does it.

I also don't believe a home machine can steam hot enough or long enough to provide sanitization.

My water tank is set at 130 plenty hot enough for a machine that has a heater and will heat it even more.

Fact is my sanitize cycle is a gimmick...I wonder how many people have this same washer and don't even realize this cycle does not sanitize thermally as Whirlpool says it does.

My advice to the poster was to make sure whatever machine she chooses does in fact do a thermal sanitize if thats an important must have.

I did stick a therm. In to check the temp as Moroseaz says on sanitize ...several times...just before it was finishing the main wash. I got 111 F and several times just as the steam that I enabled stopped, that reading into the center of the clothes was 119F.......For sure no heat.

But my allergin cycle heats things up for sure at 154+F...

Moroseaz if your washer does a thermal sanitize and mine doesn't than I'd expect mine must be messed up or it has a different control board than yours. Have you ever checked the temps to see if yours is truely reaching those thermal sanitize temps?

Have I mentioned I LOVE my Duet!!

OK helpful as always :) It is NSF certified on their list. I think that means allergen certified and what I copied above is from the NSF website. I interpret it to mean that if I use the sanitary cycle it will actually remove allergens - and who knows if it is sanitizing anything and I am OK with that if that is right :) my DH is allergic to dust mites according to his Dr.

In terms of size - I think if we were the do some laundry everyday kind of people the compact would be fine. but the kids seems to generate a lot of stained clothes and with 5 of us in the house that are procrastinators that mostly do large loads once a week, I think the compact would feel like we were doing laundry all weekend long. I don't know, just what I am guessing. :)

Well lowe's was fast and it is on its way, so I hope I am interpreting the NSF certified thing correctly! :)

Well, they are here! They just fit so you can open the door. this is not a door we will use often, but we wanted it to be able to be opened. It opens in to our sunroom and there are double doors leading to that room from the kitchen as well.

The washer is installed. The dryer is not :( apparently we need a new dyer duct or something. the delivery person did not feel comfortable installing it and neither did DH so a dryer vent person is coming tomorrow to clean or replace or both I guess.

So, we wait another day for laundry.....

These are going to be fantastic machines! I have relatives who are hard on their machines and they are still going strong after many years. Makes sure that these are hooked up with a surge protector to save the control boards.

Pink, we've been down the thermal sanitize road before and it's a dead-end. There are others on this forum that can be of more help than me.

Dadoes, I knew you'd know the answer. We've ascertained that many websites aren't updating or providing accurate information on all models. There are people on here that say they can set the temps on their washers. I cannot but with the recirculating hot water, I know my hot water loads are probably hotter than many other posters can claim in cooler climates. I finally purchased an instant-read thermometer but still haven't cared enough to open that washer door during the steam cycle and reset a load back to the beginning :). Even if I did take the load temp, I'd probably still not match Pink's readings.

Boop, are those the LG's? Look very nice. Remember to post a pic of the front panels!

    Boopadaboo thanked Jeannie Cochell

I think our machines probably have different control panels or my allergin is my sanitize and another is my allergin..im not out ruling my control board being wired or whatever hook up wrong. I'm not complaining, anymore I'm happy with my machine, I get my hot and very hot washes which was a must have, I don't expecially care what its labeled as.

Washers with onboard water heaters can (of course) increase the temperature vs. what is available from the household supply ... but only after the water is already filled into the tub. There's no way to reduce the temp lower than what comes out of the cold supply tap. My tap-cold is 85°F+ during summer months, which is higher than the Warm ATC temp (75°F to 82°F of many machines nowadays.

I need to cite a correction. Perhaps there are others of which I'm not aware but Fisher & Paykel are the only washers I do know on the U.S. market that can directly moderate the water temp (within range of the household supply) as it flows into the machine. The inlet valves run on DC and are digitally-controlled ... the control board can rapidly pulse the current to control the hot and cold flow rate so as to attain the target ATC temperature mix. If the ATC sensor wants 105°F, the valves are controlled so that's what flows in.

Other machines with ATC turn the cold and hot flow fully on or off to average the incoming flow around the target temperature ... sometimes it runs higher, sometimes lower. I've seen some run full-flow hot when set on cold or warm (although only for short periods), which is a potential issue if temperature-sensitive items are subjected to it.

I will take a better picture. :) I asked DH to text me one as I am at work. I was lucky to get this. A picture of the washer and dryer? (he said. ) yes a picture of the washer and dryer - text me it please. ha ha

they are the LG's the 4270

the Duets would not have allowed us to open the door so glad I I caught that in time. I am wondering if the pedestals would fit. not sure if it is worth that little bitty washer in the pedestal especially when we have so many expenses moving in to a new place.

That's a great looking pair. Will be very interested to hear about performance as you go forward. Congrats!

Boopadaboo, I am considering the 4270 which is available at Lowe's as a close out. How is it performing? Pro's and con's? It's not my first choice either but the reduced depth is a winner. I'd love to hear a report of your first month!!

Well, it has been a crazy month for us, so honestly did not get a normal months worth of use. we had a dryer vent problem which delayed use another week after delivery and then we went on vacation. I will say I love the washer. it seems to perform well and I like the various cycles I have used. They dryer on the other hand is OK. I don't know if we are idiots, but we always have to put the dryer on timed dry to get dry clothes. we had the same issue with the last LG we had (well after about 6 months) I have not had a chance to come back and ask if it is user error on these boards yet. It is not horrible, especially because I am used to it from my last set. But it really irritates DH.

Thank you for the reply! I really appreciate it! Is your dryer the DLEX427? I'm curious how you installed it to get minimum depth, side vent? I hadn't even thought of venting until today when I looked at the space.

The wfw8740d1 does have an internal water heater for steam and sanitize. If you found conflicting info its not correct. We have one and the manual specifically talks about it. my wife uses the steam regularly and loves everything about the washer. It also won a couple awards from energy star and others for being number 1 in lowest energy use.
