White appliances + Kitchen Window + Layout Dilemma

I live in a condo building where a developer came in years ago and put in kitchens like this: a wall of cabinets, appliances and counters on one side and then just plug in a little fridge on the other! I admit it photographs well but is of VERY cheap construction and layout is in efficient. I am planning on a remodel, I have three questions for everyone:

What do I do with the refrigerator? The kitchen is very narrow. I can do a galley kitchen with full depth counters on the right and 15" deep counters on the left. If I move the fridge over to the right, I have to sacrifice the peninsula which is our main workstation. I cannot extend the kitchen further into the apartment either.

What do I do with the awkward space where the cabinets meets the window? We don't get much light and its a dirt trap that is tough to clean.

Do I try to match the white appliances to white cabinets? Go a completely different color? I will be extending the existing hardwood (prefinished reddish/golden oak)

into the kitchen

Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks Houzzers!
