Need advice on rugs

The front door of our house opens to an entry/hallway then steps into the great room. The large hallway keeps going past a bookcase to a set of stairs. Do we put a squarish rug from the main door to the great room entrance then a "runner" past the bookcase to the stairway or just do one long rug for the whole front entry/hallway area?

The rug area is 8'x26', but maybe also need a doormat?
