Washer in Garage. Dryer in Backyard. Clothesline.

When designing our home the architect put up the idea of having the laundry in the master bedroom closet... we liked the idea. The hamper is directly across from the washer, so very easy to load. The context for this is a down sized two bedroom house with our kids out on their own, so unless we have guests it's just our own laundry that has to be done.

Our laundry room is in a portion of our unfinished basement. I would love to have a nice laundry room like I see in photos, but no other spot than where we have it. Other projects have higher priority to me than a laundry room, so that's why we still have it the way it is.

We have a midcentury modern home with separate garage with large laundry room, toilet, shower, laundry sink. Planning to build an outdoor kitchen with over head deck to have rain free access to the laundry. It's a pain to go outside to the laundry but cheaper than a remodel to the house. When the outdoor kitchen area is finished, it will be very nice. Will have screen block on the road side for some privacy. We are in central Florida with a lake across the street and one in the back yard. It can't get much better than this!

Knew this was a big issue in our new home so included a laundry room both upstairs and downstairs. Obnoxious....but very functional with 3 occupied bedrooms upstairs.

My washer/dryer are in a closet - inside the master bedroom! I'm in a rental and I thought it would be the bane of my existence - but I love it! Lifestyle-wise I never do laundry when I'm sleeping so noise is not an issue. I have to walk seven steps to get to the laundry basket and folding/hanging up post-dryer is a breeze.

I doubt it'd work for a large family but for a two bedroom place it couldn't be better.

Our laundry room shares with dishwasher and back entrance/mud room. The washer and dryer used to be in the unfinished basement. We moved them up as I had been ill which left me wobbly in the legs and I refused to go up and down the primitive steps in case I fell and broke into pieces. We have never regretted the move.

@scottalfele - not obnoxious at all. Appropriate in some homes. We have raised our children in a four-story three bedroom condo with only a laundry closet and we've been just fine. But after 13 years of living in condoville and saving our pennies, searching for a home we felt was a good investment and we'd be happy in the rest of our lives, and with the master on the first floor, and four bedrooms upstairs, a laundry room both upstairs and downstairs made sense to us too. When the kids are grown and gone and we are not as mobile, we can basically live downstairs, but for now, the kids can take care of their own laundry upstairs and we won't be beating up the house hauling laundry up and down the stairs. My family all live out of town so they stay awhile when the visit so they will have space to do their laundry. I feel very fortunate and if it were not for this house in this location, and the odd space it filled perfectly, I would be perfectly content with just one laundry room instead of laundry closet like we have now.

Yes, we have a mud room from the garage that goes into the kitchen. It's a laundry room with the pantry behind bi-fold doors. It's a very convenient space, as it has space for the dog's bed (when we had a dog), place to hand laundry when drying, space in the pantry for appliances, and it's convenient to the kitchen.

I have a 3-purpose room. It is for laundry, the pet center, and my office. We built the house/room this way on purpose. I can work, have my pets with me, and do laundry, all at the same time! We have a large sink as many laundry rooms do, and my pets are small, so I can bathe them there. I have many storage cabinets, and purposely designed open spots on the floor under the counters where the dog condo goes, litter box, etc. So it looks neat and is serviceable. I have a built in desk on one wall which houses my computer, etc.

I have the laundry room off the kitchen, adjacent to back door and back stairs. It's not big, but big enough for laundry and for some yard stuff, extra cleaning supplies, and infrequently-used serving dishes. It is a catch-all for whatever people can't think what to do with, or don't have time to take back to the detached garage. It stays a mess ALL the time. There's no room for an extra sink or for drying things -- I put handwash items on hangers and hang from chandelier to dry!

In an ideal world, I think we should just admit that there will always be Extra Stuff, and plan a nice big utility room to hide it in! I'd ADORE to have a big laundry room!

We have a raised ranch with a finished lower level. Part of the lower level is unfinished with the furnace, hot water heater and the "laundry room". Since my bedroom is at the back of the house and just over this area, I had a laundry chute placed in my bedroom closet so the dirty clothes were convenient to the washer. I usually iron in the family room with a movie running to distract me from the chore.

I HAVE A LAUNDRY TUCKED IN THE HALL WAY TO THE GARAGE WITH A CUPBOARD ABOVE AND NO SINK. THIS IS WHAT THE BUILDER PUT IN. WHAT WAS HE THINKING. CLEARLY HE DOES NOT DO LAUNDRY.

We just finished remodeling our country home in PR, a laundry room was a must for me, and it needed to be cheerful and bright. Yellow walls and white subway tile on a herringbone pattern did the trick, the wall accent made with glass/mother of pearl backsplash that we used in our kitchen is the icing on the cake, I love the results¡

All you guys are sooo lucky!! I have my laundry room in my dirt floor basement, with both machines sitting on an elevated platform. So sad, :( sigh.

Laundry room is a powder room combo. Not a lot you can do in the room other than wash/dry and use the bathroom.

We've downsized to a 1953 ranch style, has a laundry room that is huge. Windows, utility closet, room enough with the W/D for my office (big pine table, filing cabinet, tons of storage shelves above, the ironing board and still has room left over. It's right off the kitchen. Not fixed up cute, but really serviceable.

Mine is right off the kitchen in a separate room. It's small but functional and due for new paint, light fixture and floor soon!

Just bought a 1980s house and the W/D hookup is in the garage. I hate it, but no place in the house for it without a huge remodel (and it's technically a condo, so can't add rooms). I would LOVE an article from Houzz on how to make a garage laundry area look nice. My garage is horrible - I am thinking of drywalling it soon, but still have unmoveable air conditioning ducts across the garage roof. Any helpful pics would be very welcome. What have other Houzz readers done to make a nice laundry area in their garage?

My current laundry area is in the basement on the Dark Side. I am going to have to move it nearer the windows though, to get the washer to drain into the septic system instead of the dry well. Our last house had a laundry closet in the bedroom hallway, where everything was carpeted. The washer flooded two bedrooms twice and was a bear to remove for repairs. I would rather live with an ugly place for the washer than deal with flooding a quarter of my interior.

My laundry room is 17' x 10'. Completely multifunctional as a laundry room, mud room, and dog area when I have guests.

I am in the process of designing my retirement dream house. It's small but packed with features that fit the way I live and function. My washer and dryer will be in my master closet. While this solution would not be ideal for a larger family, it's perfect for me because I'm steps away from where my clothes will be put away.

My laundry room is 16 by 9 feet on the second floor where all the bedrooms are. One whole wall is cabinets with the washer and dryer under wall cabinets. There is a large cabinet for hanging clothes with a giant drawer on the bottom that is the hamper. There is an open countertop with the sewing machine on it and wall cabinets above. The blank wall has a built in ironing board that I LOVE !!

When we remodeled the Master Bedroom I added a walk-in closet complete with stacked Washer dryer combo. Just remove the clothes from dryer and hang them up.

Love my laundry room- one of the reasons I bought the house! Kitty litter and kitty grooming station (folded towel!) both comfortably accommodated.

My regret about our laundry room, which you enter off of the garage, is that it isn't big enough. Our family members enter our house through the garage and into the laundry room and then it's a traffic jam. If I ever had another house built, it would have a HUGE laundry room, just for that reason!

Laundry "room" is more closet really. Machines are to right in small room that is passage from hall to garage. I stacked machines and hope to add utility sink and single small storage cab above. Want to extend room into garage so have place for kitty boxes and some storage.

Separate laundry room, love it! Previous owners had moved w/d to this former "workshop" off of the garage so it was fairly depressing and non-functional as a laundry room. Think of dirty cement floors, ratty rugs, low light, cheap fake dark wood paneling, w/d not adjacent so wet clothes could get dropped going from one to the other. The door from the hallway couldn't even be opened all the way as it would hit an overhead soffit holding the heating duct system. But, it beat our former home set-up of having it in a closet in the eat-in kitchen area where I'd be sorting dirty laundry or folding clean stuff (husband, three kids) when guests came over and have to hurriedly stuff it back into baskets stacked on top of the machines. We eventually spruced it up by removing the paneling, painting, adding a sink from a big box store set (an expensive proposition because a sewer line from the floor above had to be moved to accommodate, but well worth it to have a laundry sink), moving the door down a ways and making it a pocket door, adding industrial shelving to hold all my sorted-by-type laundry type baskets which has the added bonus of using the top shelf space to lay drying racks upon, adding used cabinets from my husband's work remodel, hanging a curtain rod down vertically from the soffit to hold hangers, adding a large light and adding a rolling laundry cart to hold drying/clean clothes. It's not magazine picture perfect but it's very functional.

I have full size stacked washer-dryer in my walk-in closet. The townhouse came that way and I love it because I don't have to climb stairs. We're retired, so there is only laundry for two adults, not a lot in a week.

I removed the lower shelves in the bathroom linen closet and put a in front load washer. The upper shelves hold detergent and some towels. On nice days clothes go on the line outside. In winter I use a drying rack and the "over the door and handles" drying method.

I have a 2nd floor laundry which you can see from our 2 story foyer. It was a small, very basic room - 4 walls, w/d but no sink or cabinetry....until a few months ago when I finally got custom cabinetry installed which has built in hampers as well as shelves. I installed the ceramic tile myself. I had a large (Formica) top installed across the top for folding. I just love doing laundry now!

I have a 1964 ranch. Laundry day starts with filled laundry baskets carried from bedrooms down the hall, through the dining room, through the kitchen to the garage. Down 10 concrete steps at the back of the garage to the unfinished basement. Wait...the fun doesn't end there....then 27 steps (counted many times while carrying the laundry) to the farthest corner of the basement. Repeat as necessary. A silver lining to this is there is a 20 ft clothes line where I can line dry items. One would think I would be in great shape, right? These knees aren't getting any younger! I would love to have room upstairs for the w/d. Daring to dream.

Ranch house - laundry facilities are in a hall closet and I love it. Has washer/dryer next to each other and two shelves above with a pull out from one wall over the washing machine to hang wet things I don't want in the dryer. The doors are custom made 'barn stall doors' which allows for nice ventilation even with the doors closed. It also deadens any machine noise nicely. Space is just short of 7' by 3.5' with room to spare.

I do 3 loads each week - one for me and the others for horses and dogs.

Yes, I did design the laundry and the house. It's near the bedrooms just next to bath and the water heater so piping was short, sweet and simple. Ventilation is a simple pipe that hits the outdoors within 10'. Easy to keep clean, particularly lint.

All one level home. Punched through into garage from kitchen dining area. Five feet deep by seven feet so I can leave the door of the front loader slightly ajar. Closet pole hanging rod above units. Very functional.

I designed the floor plan of our house and put in 2 laundry rooms, one on the main floor where the master bedroom is and one in the finished basement where 4 of our 5 children had their bedrooms. I also included a sewing counter and built in ironing board in the main laundry room. When they were old enough to do their own laundry, the 4 with basement bedrooms did it in the basement while my oldest, whose bedroom was a bonus room over the garage, shared the main floor one with me. Occasionally one would come up with theirs, complaining that their sister had left her clothes in the washer. A laundry basket for each of them took care of that. They were required to keep their basket in the laundry room as long as their clothes were in the washer or dryer so someone else could empty what they needed to do theirs. The extra laundry room, and a mini kitchen, came in handy as 3 of the kids have lived in the basement for a time with spouses, 2 of them also with children. It was also handy to not have to do my kids' laundry after about the age of 12 or 13.

My washroom-as the inspector said "is quaint". It is outside in the room under our water tank. The poles that support it are round so the wallboards do not fit tightly in the corners. There is a deep sink and a freezer in there also. I am impatiently waiting for us to redo our one bathroom and add room for a laundry area right off the kitchen. Oh bliss!

I also have a new house, so made a laundry room, which also houses my husband's golf kits.

I guess you'd call it a room...it has 4 unfinished, stud exposed walls and a door. The house is 78 years old. The room is on the lower level and is very, very small. It has an unfinished concrete floor with a drain in it, a small, plastic set tub, two stackable, small appliances, a small cabinet and a metal file cabinet. It would be very easy to make huge improvements to the room, but I'm still working on the upstairs rooms. We just bought the house 2 years ago, so I'm still painting, etc.

I have a laundry closet behind bifold doors right off the Master BR. Works very well. When I get ready to build my "dream home" I will have a dedicated laundry room that will double as a craft and sewing room.

I can't stand the laundry area being in a "mud room" right off the garage as this is typically a very dirty area and when I take clothes out of the dryer, I want a clean space in case something falls on the floor.

Our laundry room also double as storage for things like lightbulbs, tools, tape and fasteners and all sorts of things.
