My new Bar Backsplash of wine corks

last modified: 8 months ago

This area was a clutter gatherer but with the new wonderful "Normandy" granite in my whole kitchen, I wanted to make it into a bar area. I used my and friend's wine corks and also bought some on eBay, then used a hot glue gun to attach. It was so much fun to choose each special cork and attach with the writing facing the way I wanted. It is a show stopper.

Great DIY project! Do you have any kind of protective sealer on the corks?

No, I am not going to be using a blender or anything here, but it is a good idea. I saw later that you can get the natural corks quite cheaply on Amazon too. I didn't want the usual trivet 2 x 2 pattern so played around and did this one but have to either trim or use shorter corks for the standing up ones. I painted the wall a dark brown so spaces behind that might show through would blend. Every night project, with a glass of wine, of course!

Also have had to remove some of them that were crooked and man they STICK with that glue gun, took sheet rock off with them!

Looks Great! You could easily seal with a layer of polyurethane that will make it easier to clean. Everything gets dust on it after a while!

Look for a water based spray (Remember to cover your side walls and countertop) or brush on a layer or two.

Favoritegram, I did use a glue gun, after testing... hot glue stick, not cold. It pulled the sheet rock off with it the few I needed to pry off to change so it is going to hold. Plus I glued onto the cork next to it usually too. I had so much fun, I kept going around the corner and then tapered off!

Thanks Carole! THis is my first post on Houzz, not sure, but I can send it to you on FB or email if needed... maybe someone here will tell us how to do it. Maybe I need to add this photo to the top thread so you can go there and not sure how to do THAT?

I have been collecting corks for years and have toyed with this idea. My backsplash is a small area so it might not take that long. You have inspired me. Thanks.

This still gets compliments! Since it is “artistic” it is timeless. My girlfriend did one afterwards on screw on panels she can remove, smart!
