How should we finish the fireplace?

How would you finish this fireplace? Cultured stone, barn wood, tile, paint, mantle, no mantle? It's in our basement. The opening on the left is to a games room with a 40" barn door and rail system going in. Holding off on picking stain for the door until I figure out the fireplace wall. It faces our tv/media room. Television is going on the wall to the left of the barn door so no tv above the fireplace. Looking forward to some suggestions. Thank you :)

We just finished this in our home - my wife picked out the stone.
I really really really wish we would have done a tiled wood or bar wood type.
So barnwood gets my vote.

1. No mantel.
2. Paint or next:
3. Ceramic tile (aprx 12" × 36" in horizontally) and maybe add some chrome straps between tiles maybe each 24".
4. Wood! wood plank, 3,5 "- 5,5"wide, maybe hardwood floor pre finish plank.

No barnwood, too trendy, will be very dated much sooner than anything else.

I think the dark indents are saying pretty contemporary so my vote would be some nice closed storage on either side of the fireplace with great art above the storage and then I think i might just paint that wall a bright accent color and see if that is all it needs I too am a minimalist , choose the art and then a color from it for the fireplace . I would not bother with a mantel unless you want to have it to decorate.

I really like it as it is. I opt for no mantle. I'm assuming you have one on your main floor for the holidays. What are you doing with the hearth? A concrete look wood work in this space or a stone if you want to warm it up a bit.

As I am well into other projects, I realized I never posted the outcome of this fireplace. Should it be helpful to others here is what we ended up with seven years ago. 🤣 Love looking back on these projects. This rustic stone made for a very cozy basement family room. Everyone’s input was so helpful. Thank you.
