Single bachelor needs some help with his studio!

Hi All,

Seeking some help on finishing up the apartment I moved into a bit ago. I'm great at matching clothing, graphic design, etc. — but 100% am no good at putting together a living space. Below you'll find some pictures of my current studio which definitely needs some TLC>

A few things:

  • Just purchased all new bedding from West Elm + Brooklinen
  • Lamps from West Elm just came in last night and look great to me
  • Accent pillow for the bed? Do I need a throw?
  • Any recommendations on art to go above the bed?
  • And the wall next to the bed? Do I do some shelves? Hang 3-4 pieces of art?
  • What could I put next to the front door? I definitely want to do some hooks but I feel like some kind of table should be there.
  • Bench for end of the bed?

Any suggestions or input here would be highly appreciated!

Your wall color seems yellow and if you can change it go neutral with greige. Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Grey is great. Add framed prints above the bed to mimic a taller headboard and add neutral tones in pillow and a throw.

Here is an idea to create an area at the entry. A hall tree would be nice but you can fake one.

Just get some art to go along with your other pieces for the bare wall and some nice art or a mirror over the bed to tie everything togther, plus a luxurious bed set, more pillows, maybe a skinny Bench to help you get dressed and for storage.

I would have installed a Murphy bed in such a small space. I have one in my guest room and it's great because you can have a regular mattress on it and leave the bed all made up (pillows and all) and just pull it down when you need it. Either way you need a picture over the bed and what ever is on the wall over the bed (sconce?), should be removed. Also paint the vent the same color as the wall so it blends in.

Your space looks really great so far! The only thing that looks a bit out of place is the turquoise framed mirror. You have a lot of neutrals, and the mirror doesn't look very masculine. Just a thought!

One large horizontal piece of artwork over the bed would be great. Look for something simple and soothing, and almost as long as the headboard. You don't have room for a bench at the end of the bed. You could add a throw to the bed, but only if you would use it. Near the doorway, you could use a bench with storage, or a small chest if you need drawer storage. Otherwise, just put wall art there.

Because of the electricity there, I searched on houzz for illuminated art, but it's more money. Seems it shines in the dark! Idk could be nice.

Since you have such a small space, I would make sure to keep colors light and bright. Also you will want to add textures since you want the single room you have to be as interesting as possible. I think you should add two or three pillows, a fur throw, and a wall sculpture (all diff textures). I'd get a new chair (the one you have now is looking pretty worn out) although ones can be found for wayyy less expensive than the one I attached.

You are not going to want a bed bench in here as you will want as much floor space as possible since it's tiny.
Also, some new curtains that are hung as close to ceiling as possible that just kiss the floor. I think you should get some lined curtains.
A tall decorative object for the tray w extra texture like pic below.
Have many more ideas in case you are interested:)

The first thing I would recommend is to take down the mirror. It doesn't do anything for the room. Then I would find better spread and pillows in a more masculine look, in perhaps a grey are navy with a neat, sleek look. If you are able, I suggest painting the room and removing all of the wall sconces. No room for bench at end of bed, but I would put one near entry-door and knobs above for hanging coats, etc. Is it possible to hang the tv over fireplace? Art over bed. I see you have a mirror near bed, which is enough, you don't need a second mirror in the space. Is you chair slip covered? It's looking a bit worn out. I think the chair posted above would look great. Your lamps look good.

New draperies would help a lot too.

    Sandybean is right. New drapes.

Don't clutter up the place. In fact, if you could get by without the shelf unit in the kitchen area then it would look more streamlined. Or try it in the corner next to the fridge. That would be an excellent place for it if it fits.

Personally, I wouldn't add anything over the bed. You already have a sconce and a vent. Make the bed more the focus and not the wall.

Cute place, you've done a good job so far.

These 3 [or any such type] could be arranged over bed, allowing room for sconce -- allowing it to flow a bit in asymmetry...in other words, you could adjust and experiment...

I was gonna say add more masculine items also but I wasn't sure if it was appropriate. I actually like the Color of the mirror just have to find items in the same color group to tie everything all together
  • 9 years ago

Is that a mirror, or mirror/ tv - and is it actually framed in turquoise?

I larger size piece of artwork over the bed would look beautiful! I have attached a couple renderings of my work below for an idea. If you would like to have a custom piece of artwork created for this space please email me at contemporaryandmodern@gmail.com and I would love to work with you. I also have canvas, fine art prints and metal prints of these works and more available on my website www.contemporaryandmodern.com !

    Any feedback or questions Zachary??

A few suggestions I would consider if I had a bachelor pad again!

    - consider pillow cases and a throw that match the color of the fabric covered bed frame and headboard. I like the new West Elm bedding, but adding those items in the darker color would help the bedframe stand out as well.

    - I would not add a bench to the foot of the bed. It is already a small space, and that would make it smaller. Plus, that bed frame is nice. Don't hide it.

    - I see you like reclaimed wood, based on the stikwood art you are considering from your other post. Make something yourself! Or grab the stikwood, but I'm sure you could find something for under $249.

    - I would also recommend painting the trim of your mirror a different color. If handy, you could even replace the frame, or cover, with some more reclaimed wood?

    - You need a 'drop zone' for keys, etc. near the door. Maybe a floating shelf with a tray for keys, small stuff, and it keeps floor open.

    - Lose the fireplace screen, or replace with an updated iron style

    - Grab at least one throw pillow for your sofa or chair. Consider leather, to add some different texture to the room.

Congrat's on the new pad. It looks like it's coming together from the original post.

Hey Everyone! Really appreciate all of the feedback here. I've got some reclaimed art coming for above the bed but am still unsure what to do with this giant wall.

To be honest — I've been browsing Pinterst and Etsy for hours and simply end up getting more list. Should I add shelves to display various pictures that I can swap out? If I opt for something more permanent — I'm just not sure how to go about this.

Decided I want to tie in a bit of the farmhouse/rustic look here if I can...

I really think you have three options for art...
    1) put art over the bed and not on the wall you're asking about
    2) put art on the wall you're asking about and not over the bed
    3) put a set of 4 or 6 (whatever fits) pieces of art from a specific set of art like this (two are over the bed)...it's not a great photo shop job but you get the idea. Could be more rustic art too of course:

If you don't want art on that wall, having three staggered and different length rustic shelves would look great. Maybe plants on them?

Ok so... I think you should go with one large. Too many in a small space will make it look cluttered. It's like the theory of why people clean off shelves on bookcases because too many looks messy. .I searched for rustic art and this showed up. I know ikea has some large pieces. I think you need a focal point..and a larger piece of art..even a print could do it. so..yes I change my opinion over the bed..two large pieces would be too much. :)..but one large..good focal point.
