I would think that some larger sculptured art piece might look nice to help fill the space. I like clean spaces but this does seem a little barren to me.

Thanks CbD, the space does seem barren, which is my struggle. With essentially no wall space and limited height, a sculpture may be a great option. Here are other pictures of my home.

Since my first choice of a big leafy plant isn't possible, empty looks fine to me. The stairs themselves are already providing a lot of pattern. Putting something under the stairs is drawing attention down low to a utilitarian spot, where the item will further block the window and either fight with or be overshadowed by the stairs ....unless it is a truly powerful and large piece, in which case you can likely find a better space for it. Instead, I'd make sure the wall above the stairs had a soaring piece of artwork or perhaps a special lighting piece.

A beautiful rug and some fresh Greenery would create wonder. Try.

I would put a comfy chair and sheepskin under there for reading to take advantage of all that wonderful light.

I fully agree with Emily and I ´d definitely put the chair + table/otoman + rug composition. It will bring a warm & welcoming atmosphere.

A larger rug with that amazing yellow from the LR, running all the way under the stairs, with a chair as suggested by Emily Jowers. Convenient for putting on shoes too!

id leave it empty.... its very busy as it is now. you might consider painting the staircase something other than all grey if you'd like to do anything.

i dislike chairs, whatever, in places that seem to be luring you in so you can smack your head when you stand.

Lol nnigrt that was my first thought, but upon looking again it seems like there would be room a little closer to the door for a chair so no danger of head banging.

I do think a larger rug would look more deliberate and less huddled in the corner, at the very least though.

I would add some larger sized framed nature inspired prints (with black frames) on the large wall on the left as you enter, a woven black hemp rug and a great fixture in the ceiling if you have the electrical. Might even consider painting the inside of your door black to compliment the windows and for a more modern feel that would also tie in with the black you have in the rest of the space.

I can see a large plant/tree in that large space. A plant can certainly be sculptural, plus it's a living thing :0 Tropical plants tend to have a more contemporary appeal!

I'd think of placing it on the inside corner of your staircase, so that you walk around the tree as you go up the stairs!

If it was me. I would put these two Mooi lamps on the floor there. Sculptural during the day and awesome at night when lit up.

Your starway entry is beautiful. I would leave it plain...Just a side note...my DDIL has a stairway going from her front door to the living room or down to the family roo. Her big compint is the drt and dust that falls through the stairs....I'm for easy cleaning

@erinsean you've got a point. I do have a problem with dirt and dust from my kid's and their friend's shoes. It is difficult to clean the lower section. sometimes I have to get on my knees. Ugggh!

All lovely ideas. It's funny you mentioned yellow. My colors throughout the house are black, grey, white and my pop of color is yellow in every room.

The door you see in the photo is my back door to the deck. My front is in front of the staircase. the only thing that separates the front door from the back door is the staircase area.

Not sure I want another seating area especially in a place that can create injury (head bump). Want to make this area a wow factor...a show piece within reason. lol

I haven't read any, but seeing picture of a building [?] and squished between windows [where how many see it?] -- I'd remove that, and place something nice in the open area under the stairs.

Maybe a funky chair and battery-operated light [even if you don't use it]... here's the yellow.

@showhomes mobile / baldwin, the space to the left is my kitchen... you can see it on one of the photos. I have a 4 chair dining room (viable in the back of this photo ). I also have 3 low back stools at the end of the kitchen bar ( not visable but there) carefully placed not to obstruct the view. I will be an empty nester next year, so I'm not sure I will need more dining space. In fact, I converted the other dining space to a home office.

I would leave the floor bare, but I would put a great piece of art…your choice, of course, on the wall going up the stairs, paying attention to shape, color and lines…I like this because it relates to the vertical of the railing.

Seeing all of the black touches in your home, especially the slider railing and pix in the kitchen background, makes me want to paint the gray stairs black. Your treads look very contemporary but then the rest of the system goes a bit country, IMO. I suggest a fabric wall hanging on the stairwell wall that picks up your yellow accent. Here's one with orange as the accent.

love the space! Something sculptural with greenery would do the trick. The staircase is the star IMO. Can the bannister and balustrades change to something a little more contemporary?

You have a beautiful home, but never underestimate the power of a simple place to sit down and slip your shoes on & off! Plus, with a custom paint job, any addition to the space could be made to match the stairwell, helping the update blend seamlessly with your home's original design.

And, if you have pets, the entryway is the perfect place to design a little spot just for them!

Succulents are really impossible to kill. Even if you do kill plants after a few months, it is not that expensive to replace them

I think that a nice big leafy plant would be perfect and this can be your opportunity to try out developing your green thumb. There are many plants that don't need a lot of special care and when in doubt, go light on watering.

Where is the best places to find large art sculptures?

I reviewed your pix you posted. A large piece of art could be hung on the large wall behind the staircase, (pulling the colors from the other rooms in your home) to help draw the eye up. As far as the entry, I would probably leave it empty and place a large fiddle tree by the door. They are very easy to maintain....can be purchase at any Lowes or Home Depot. You could purchase a silk one... Ballard Designs has a selection....make sure it look real and not plastic. Hope this helps with your decision

You could easily put a "mudroom" there; a coat rack, bench, and place for shoe storage. Here is an example from a recent design we completed.
