Help !!! Would like to get rid of the comfy, but dumpy couch. Want to brighten and update.

The sofa is not a problem as far as I can tell. You need a much larger rug.

I would also remove the valance on the patio door. Look into one way draw drapes. It would be much more appealing.

The walls are drab. They could use some color even if only beige or taupe.

How do you use the room? It looks like there is another living room beyond it? Is the TV in that other room? If that is the case, I'd be inclined to make a cozy area around the fireplace (although I can see that it might be tight with where the sliders are) and then maybe a desk/game table area where the couch is now, or perhaps a wall of bookcases? It just looks too cavernous right now. Agree to lose the valance. The two fans....eh. I don't mind your couch. I would also focus on decluttering the mantle and maybe staining it. The small cabinet isn't doing much - maybe there is a better spot for it?

This room can be easily changed! A new sofa in a tighter form with some nail head accents will update the look. The rug needs to be larger. Pull the rug and sofa forward and a long sofa table with lamps behind. Your slider valance can be removed or updated with a box valance in updated cool greys with maybe a cranberry accent. The large chair could be moved forward and on the opposite side of the sofa, or could be replaced with a swivel. Would you consider painting the coffee table? It would also be great to replace it with a large round one.

Thank you all so much for all the great advise. This room is our t.v. room. I plan on removing and replacing all furniture and window coverings. My problem was furniture placement within this space. Thanks again, it's been fun.

I'm not a good artist. Since you asked about furniture location I show a sofa against the window with two chairs at the wall. I added a rug, a floor lamp and some end/side tables. You can have a sofa floating away from the patio door.

That is a square coffee table in the middle. Perhaps my pathetic drawing will encourage one of the pro's to add a comment. I'm sure mine is not the best idea.

Can you take a picture so we can see where the tv is?

I also think you need at least an 8x10' rug.

Thanks again for all the great advise. I can't wait to get started. Here's a picture of the t.v.

I would take down the curtain thing (valence?) and remove the light piece of wood from on top of the fireplace and remove all the stuff from on top of it. I agree with a bigger rug, and update the lighting to something more modern.
