overwintering several container plants

last modified: 9 years ago

I have a blue spruce and a few small gingkos (about 7 to 10 inches) to overwinter outside. I'm in an apartment so only have access to a balcony. Zone 7a/b. Last year I placed the spruce in a larger plastic pot with a few inches of mulch all around it and some on top, and it did fine. However, re-reading some threads, it seems that by including mulch on the bottom of the larger pot that the smaller ones are placed into, would serve as insulation and take away any heat supplied from the "ground" (assuming some heat would be stored in the balcony floor attached to the building).

Does that mean that for this to ideally work again that it should be placed in a larger pot surrounded by mulch on 5 sides, but not on the bottom? The gingkos are new this year. Are they large enough to overwinter outdoors in the same manner? Would it be ok to have mulch on the bottom space too? I imagine it would be harder to find a pot of the same height as the smaller one to maintain ground contact yet provide space for mulch on the sides.
