Are you open to quartz? I love my light quartz with my wood cabinets. I love my farmhouse sink too. The Kohler Whitehaven "short apron" style can be installed on a standard sink base. The Kohler Vault is a stainless farmhouse sink which also comes in a "short apron" style if you want a more industrial looking farmhouse sink. I don't know how the stainless does as to keeping the apron free from fingerprints, etc. The Whitehaven apron always looks nice. It does come in gray and black - but I have been warned not to get a dark cast iron sink because the dark shows the wear and tear more.

I like the cabinets as they are but a lighter countertop would be nice.

Given the size of the space, I would stick to one countertop material. Will you be replacing the backsplash? If not, I would pull a colour from there. A lighter tone would definitely brighten up the space.

You should probably budget for a new backsplash, as it is unlikely to be possible to remove the counters without damaging the one you have. That should open up your design space quite a bit, to get the mix of farm and industrial that you like...
