My bedding growing up in the late 60s/early 70's was "Smokey the Bear". I loved them. It's only for a few years when they are little. They have plenty of years to have something more classic or modern.

What adults may see as overkill, a child sees as "AWESOME". Be prepared when their taste changes in a year or 2 to redo everything.

I say Yes to cartoonish sheets. It's a fun reflection of childhood. No one remembers boring, solid style. I recall having flannel cat sheets. :)

I voted no because I've always gone with classic bedding e.g polka-dots, tartan etc. but have a big poster frame with a poster of whatever they are currently into on their wall. Much easier to update! :~)

Your bedroom should be about what you like. But also be relaxing. The room pictured is a little busy, but it looks fun. Character sheets are fine as are designs such as plaid, striped, dotted, etc. Personalization should be done by the parents till the child is about 2 and moved to a toddler bed and then they should have a bit of input. Then when they graduate to a "big" bed you can redo again as their tastes have probably changed a bit (around age 5-6). Then again between 10-13. And one final "teen" change around 16ish. These changes don't necessarily need to be a huge overhaul, but new sheets reflecting their interests is good for them. I had rainbow sheets because I LOVE them.

Never. Toys can take the place of a child's current obsession over a particular character, or perhaps a blanket throw. Toys can be donated when they're through and on to their next "gotta have".

Yes, for sure. It's their room, makes them feel a part of the decorating when they get to pick the themed sheets and it fosters their creativity IMO. It's a kid's bedroom for goodness sake, not a museum. Have some fun!

My girls loves horses & had a horse themed room. A son loved Spiderman & had a cozy spiderman blanket. Another loved his Winnie the Pooh towel. You don't have to do a complete re-do with their changing interests. A little bit of themed decor can go a long ways.

@The kitchen place. My dad used to make me SO mad that I'd stomp my feet. He told me Smoky Bear was named so because he liked smoke. I'd be so upset & trying to convince him why. (He loved teasing his barbie doll) I went to a forestry college, ended up being a timber marker and did some fire fighting. (I was the token female on the crew, the guy's took me out after work on my 21st. Their wives and girlfriend's were fine with it.)

Yes to the horrible colors and inferior quality novelty sheets because they can be switched out easily. No to designing around the sheets and locking into a fleeting phase.

I loved my strawberry shortcake comforter dearly...but my parents didn't let me upgrade until I was about 14. I'm a fan of crazy pillowcases - it's a smaller item, smaller eyesore, can be rotated out easily. I feel like it's wonderful to honor and include their passions, but there are so many ways to include them and make the room still tasteful. For the record, I sort of like the room featured with the poll, with the wild motifs literally wallpapered, it's a pop art effect. I wouldn't want that room, but a teenager might.

I agree it's about the kids. I can't stand this stuff but both my kids have them because they like it. I have control over a lot of their life so why not give them a bit of choice in decorating their rooms? They are proud of their rooms and their little friends love it!

I think kids outgrow these type things really quick, n what character they love today is quickly replaced tomorrow. Kids r fickle lol. :)

If the kids like it, go for it. Keep in mind however, that their taste in cartoons may change, so be ready to buy new bedding next year.

Life is short. Enjoy the little things in life like having whimsical sheets. If you or a loved one wants a Tardis Duvet Cover or Snoopy Flannel Sheets for their bed encourage them to buy and use them. Don't spend your life worrying about what other people think of your bedding choices. Life is short, enjoy it on sheets that make you smile.

Absolutely! By having a say in choosing their own bedding, the child takes ownership of the room.

As a child I actually lined my bed with, at various times, Wonder Woman and Miss Piggy sheets!

I wish I could vote no but Kids need to be kids. I painted the boys rooms a nice warm gray knowing as they grow, we will likely have colorful characters on our bed sets. Pottery Barn has sets that look as good as character sets can. I have also had some custom made on Etsy that have been tasteful.

How could anyone give up the Babar the Elephant comforter. Classic 1931 character in the French children's book. Mais, Non!

Most cartoon or kids sheets and bedding sets are inexpensive so it should be all about making them happy. Yes you will have to change them out to whatever the next phase or thing they are into but think about it....as adults we change out our bedding decor when we get tired of it too!!

My boys, when about 5 & 6 had over and half-under L-shaped built in bunk beds with Alvin-Simon-Theodore tunnel shaped TENTS on each bed. They slept in same themed Chipmunks sleeping bags in the tents so that made bed making and bedding washing a "piece of cake" . These kid's poly bedroll sleeping bags wash and dry quickly and I was ALL FOR ANYTHING that got them excited about going to bed...!!!

Besides I liked the Chipmunks too :o)

Bedding yes, walls no. But having cartoon character toys and books etc okay in shelving baskets or the life.

We have a Star Wars and Marvel bedding for ourselves (had it on our wedding registry and it was nice to see that people bought them for us), so I'm in favour of cartoon bedding :) Don't see why not if you (or your kid) enjoys them. I would, however, never put them on walls simply because interests can change. Putting up a new poster is less effort (and usually nicer) than stripping a wall :p

I choose fun whimsical decor for my daughters room and avoid the commercial influence - she is still little and I know things will change when she starts having more input and exposure through friends....but I hate how kids toys and decor is so commercialized.....so we choose not to buy toys/decor etc that are marketed to kids if that makes sense....we avoid the popular cartoon characters, movies etc....figure she has the rest of her life to be baraged by that stuff, why start now...we don't have TV either so that helps some. We try to encourage creativity that is not fueled by the popular cartoon characters, movies etc.

Yes! We still have Star Wars sheets and blankets from when my sons were young, and now the grandchildren love them! I'd rather make children happy than worry about decorating.

Not a fan. I would let them have star wars sheets but I wouldn't do a comforter. I let them pick their room colors and then I choose a plaid or something that works with the colors. We let them express themselves through artwork--which is easily changed out as their interests change. My middle child wanted a mini-figure yellow room and that's what he has. He has a navy/red/green/yellow Madras comforter and some fun lego art. When he's over lego we'll just switch out the artwork but pretty good chance its staying yellow until he moves out.

I'm okay with sheets (that most people will not see but the child will enjoy - I remember Star Wars, Wonder Woman, rainbows, and Holly Hobby) and posters on the wall of whatever their latest obsession is, but I'm not crazy about the comforters, pillows, curtains, etc. For one, fads change so often, you'll spend a fortune every time something is no longer "cool." Second...I admit, I find most of them pretty tacky. (Although I would still be okay with Star Wars!) A nice comforter set that can grow with them is better and ultimately less expensive.

No. I dont like commercialization in the home. I dont think things like that are generally a display of true self expression but outsourcing identity. If I am going to diverge from my preferred aesthetically pleasing approach to a space it is going to be for sentimental or practical reasons. I love letting them incorporate their own creations and productive passions into our home though. I find that more self empowering than cartoon characters.

That is entirely up to each family. Doesn't everyone go along with the latest fads in decorating anyway. The children are no different. In the 80s, my 10-year old cousin was obsessed with thundercats cartoon. For Xmas, my aunt got him thundercats curtain, wallpaper and bedset. And the poor guy was then too scared to sleep in his room because of all the characters looking at him at night. So, careful with not overdoing it.
