Space for DXV Freestanding Tub in Alcove

Problem: We are adding on a master bed/bath and my husband thinks we should increase our vanity size which removes space around a freestanding tub. Usually not a problem but the tub is in an alcove. How much room should be allotted around a freestanding tub (pictured below) for ease of access, cleaning, etc.?

The tub is 36" wide. The highest portion will be closest to the vanities with the lowest portion, easiest way to get in, facing the window.

My husband wants to increase our vanities from 36" to 42". He wants to ask the framer to add 6" to the walls behind the vanities, taking this space from each side of the tub. This leaves 2 feet (or a little less) on either side of the tub.

I tried to picture it as best I could. What do you think, larger vanities or more wiggle room into the tub?
