I would stain it the same color as the wood trim around your ceiling. It will look fine with the white walls.

Then ask yourself if you want to spend another day stripping and sanding. It looks like a few more hours would complete the job. If not, then prime and paint.

The old tile grout can be made a pristine white with grout paint. Quick and easy.

just putting stain on without properly prepping those doors will look horribly blotchy. They need to be stripped, then sanded, wood conditioner, then stain, then a top coat. And quite frankly, it will be like putting lipstick on a pig. sorry, but they are in poor shape, based on what I can see. If you are adept at refinishing, you could probably make them look good.

I don't know if you tried to do something with the medicine cabinet. it looks like it's partially sanded. when you put stain on that, it will look two tone, blotchy and not attractive. You have to remove ALL of the old stain before applying new stain. It's a lot of work.

Can you look on Craigslist and see if you could pick up one of those oak cabinets and often attached countertop, that people are practically giving away? Then you could just change out one for the other. Pretty simple job. Something like that, you could paint a cool mid century color and it would brighten up the bathroom nicely. (of course the lighting suggestion would also need to be done).

Please change out the outlet (GFCI) to something whiter (ditto for the plate cover).

If you can't do the new vanity, just sand down what you have very smooth and paint it. You can also paint the tile with special paint.

Awesome info! Great suggestions all around. I want to share a few pictures after working a bit tonight. I feel the sanding helped greatly?Also, if keeping the vanity is the option we go with...do you know of any way to give them the modern "flat front" without the trim piece. Is there a way to have a front cut? And then adhered to the existing door? That way I get the look I want (without trim) and I could stain them the same real as vanity frame. The picture of the vanity door has only been stripped once and nothing else has been done to the doors or drawers since. Thank you for taking the time to help.

If you want flat front, full overlay doors, you will have to get something else. Like apple pie said, taking off that trim will not work (plus the door may end up smaller) Just work with those. Maybe stain the body and paint the doors?

use varathane or general finishes Gel. That looks like pine or fir, so hopefully it will take the stain ok. remember, wood conditioner first. Then your stain. General finishes has a Spiced Walnut thats a nice shade. If you want darker, try Java.

so your cabinet would look something along these lines: (don't mind the shape)

dark wood body and white doors (or black doors, or navy blue). for the paint, use BenMoore Advance in a semi or gloss finish. Use the paint on the inside of the medicine cabinet too.

@ Beth H It looks like I will have to work with the cabinets, trim and all. I do like the idea of white/darker wood. If I had to paint them I did have the idea of a midnight black/blue cabinet, brass/gold fixtures, white cream walls. I will look into the different BenMoore Advance paints, needed that advice. Would you leave the medicine cabinet door off? The existing one has a damaged mirror. I don't need the storage, bathroom has plenty already. Painted inside with a couple shelves?

I would paint it a classic MCM color. Bright orange or green :) It's a guest bath, right? It can be a little crazy. You aren't going to be able to make that bathroom look the way you want without a complete reno, so embrace it and have some fun in the meantime.

You could even paint the beams on the ceiling. Honestly, I feel like the wood is just bringing it down unless you can really revive them.
