Hardy Shrubs or Trees for Balcony

Hello,


I have a 27th floor balcony which faces south and west in New York City (zone 6b). The south receives full sun all day long. I have had a bit of trouble with boxwood dying.


Does anyone have recommendations for other trees, shrubs, or tall plants that can withstand the bright sun, wind, and winter?
