Need help selecting patio door

Hi all, first post. My wife and I are remodeling our 1970s house in the Kansas City area, and are at the point where we need to replace two French doors with sliding patio doors. So far, I have talked to one highly-respected contractor who is quoting me 2 Provia Endure sliders for $6,000 installed and another well-known contractor who quoted me $7,000 for 2 Andersen 400 doors. I have done all the reading I can and have basically found that Provia is about as highly-respected a door as you can find, and that contractor says that he actually recommends the vinyl Endure over his other companies' fiberglass versions because of the Provia quality and how well the Endure doors slide (he also sells Marvin windows and doors). Based off just these two quotes and the research I've done, I'm leaving heavily towards the Provia even if it is a vinyl door vs the wood of the Andersen. Everything I've read says a high-quality vinyl is not a "cheap" finish.
Additionally, there are all other kinds of options for companies to go with. I want to do this right the first time and go with a quality product, while keeping budget in mind. Can anyone provide feedback on Provia/Andersen sliders, or other companies? Some I've seen in my area are Marvin/Integrity by Marvin, Kolbe, Windsor, Pella, Jeld Wen (hard to find contractor so far), and Sunrise. It's also incredibly hard to find showrooms that have these doors installed so we can see how they operate. Really appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks for the reply (not sure why my spacing didn't translate into the message - I'm sure that was very hard to read). Do you have any input as to how the Provia compares to the Andersen 400, or what makes the 400 superior?

Are there any other brands on that list that you'd consider? Thanks again.

Depends on what you are comparing that would decide what is superior on a product comparison. Andersen makes a nice sliding door to be certain. If you are thinking that wood is a better fit for you, that would nudge that product ahead of the Provia. Do you have a specific buying criteria that you are trying to hit on?

All interior trim will be white, so from a design standpoint, the wood interior is not a concern of mine. My main concerns are performance, quality, and durability. If wood is superior in those regards, then that does matter.

I do have a company coming out tomorrow to bid on a Restorations/Sunrise door that seems to be a good door as well.

That door you are getting ready to see is probably the best of the three in terms of what you are looking for. It is very well regarded indeed.

A high quality vinyl door will outperform a wood door in every aspect. Our door uses the same extrusion as sunrise and we have plenty of success with it.

i have yet to see the provia endura door but have seen the window and its pretty stout.

Just to update this - we ended up going with the Sunrise Restorations doors. Extremely happy with the product and with the install, which was top notch.

We liked them so much that we just placed an order for all new Restorations windows (sliders to replace 40 year old double casement wood Andersens) and another patio slider to replace the last remaining original one in our house. Thanks to all who recommended the Sunrise product.

Awesome feedback. Thanks for the follow up. Post up some pictures when you get a chance and your feedback does help future browsers with their own projects.

"A high quality vinyl door will outperform a wood door in every aspect."

    Wow, that's a big statement-and subjective.

Thats not a subjective statement at all, i agree with it. The performance data confirms that in every way. Higher end vinyl is superior in terms of energy efficiency,

Window1, what brand do you sell?

I'd agree. The initial statement was perhaps a tad strong and generalized, but the top performing vinyl doors on the market will typically have better u factor, air leakage, etc. Sunrise restorations, Okna Elegante, Softlite Kingsroyal, Provia, etc. are all very nice doors. There are great wood doors too, and they have a "richness" in look and feel that is hard (or impossible) to match in a vinyl door---its just a trade off for performance in most cases.

@pmbalint, you made a great choice in that Restorations door, it will serve you well.
