IMO painting it will only change the color it will still look dated . Klenk makes a paint for tile you could use that but really removing this and doing a nice simple porcelain tile is the way I would go

Thank you for responding! That project is more than my skill level! Do you know if it's possible to tile over existing tile? Not sure how I would deal with the mantle.

You could try painting the dark tile the same color as the light elements and see if you like it. Maybe if the decorative elements don't stand out so much it would look better?

But really the only way to get it to look updated would be to replace the tile.

You know, tiling yourself is not as hard as you might think. Removing the old is messy but pretty easy. Why not remove the existing file, see what you have, and then pick a new surround whether it's new tile or brick or something else? A nice project for the winter months.

I agree, it is possible to tile over

Often clients cover brick or tile with faux paint. If that's what is in your prefer to spend on the project rather than a total redo, then yes! Hiring a faux painter in your area (one that has good reviews) could help insure that the paint won't chip off.
