Yes you could paint your doors a wide range of darker colours. You have enough off-white trim all around to have it look good. Black or yes I do agree with gustaruygers. Really any colour dark would work. Not to add another fire to the mix but something like a charcoal grey as it would be in the same colour family as the walls only deeper and richer. Either way, it will look good.

What else is nearby? Do you have black elsewhere that this would tie into? Entry table? Artwork? What does the outside of the doors have on it? Is there carpet on the stairs? Just hard to be sure with so little additional information. A chandelier? Just painting the door for the sake of painting it might not be best use of time and money.

Why black? Lack of imagination? I'm serious. Nothing in that space would lead me to pick black for a huge door like that.

Black- mainly because I have seen a lot of photos with the interior doors painted black and it makes everything pop. But also because we have a black chandelier and black (iron) balusters in the entry. Hardwood floors in adjacent rooms are very dark brown. I'm open for suggestions!

The doors are lacking compared to the rest of the space. Painting them would help. I like the idea to put black paper on them for a week and see how you like it.

I thought it might help to give you a visualization of this approach. It helps a great deal to see some of the details of your entry and I think since your stair balusters and your chandelier are black, I would carry black to the doors. I would also add some black accents to the entry. I could see a pair of black demilune tables either side of front doors. Or perhaps a black pot with some green plants. Or a black sofa table where the Christmas tree is after the holidays. Perhaps some black framed prints on the walls to the adjoining room. This is what would make this all come together in a very classy way. Here are some photos that bring those ideas to life for you.

this is an entry similar to yours, except it is a single door and it is wood, but it makes my point. Notice the corner of what is a sofa type table on the right in black. The little school bench is black. The prints on the walls above the bench and either side of the front door are black framed, white matted wall hangings. The rug has dark colors. It is all these details that will help you realize this change to it maximum advantage.

This is a different set up and the door has glass panels, but just to give you a visualization of how the black would look. It is in keeping with your traditional styling. So, bottom line, I think it would be stunning and more dramatic than your current look.

Here is simple mock-up to help. I could't get a door the right look, but this can help you a bit to see it before you do it! I also put two small tables in black under your great leaded glass windows to bring that black in and repeat the color. Two white orchids either table top. One thing I am wondering. In your photos (and I hope this is my monitor) your trim looks kind of light latte? Or is it white? Hoping it is white?

I really think black is the way to go. with the other blacks in the entry, the gray just doesn't do it for me. But, I leave it to ccryer.

When I first looked at the door I thought black?? But now that u show us the staircase it makes sense why u asked. It's best to show the whole space in order to get a better understanding of a space. Good luck. :)
