Did you tile before or after range hood installation.

I went round and round w/ my contractor. I have a wall mounted chimney style vent hood and I am doing subway all the way up to top of cabs. I wanted tile backsplash installed before mounting vent hood. To me, it doesn't't make sense to tile around the hood. Grout lines could be off, extra cutting of tiles, grout on my expensive new SS hood, and what if it ever had to be replaced? He insists the vent hood would not mount correctly if he had to drill through the tile. My HVAC guy said just the opposite. I would love to know which way this should be done. BTW, contractor installed hood behind my back, but Tile hasn't gone up yet. I will deal with him later as project is almost completed. Please help.
