The current combination is pretty nice, but if you're looking to paint, you could do a shade of gray (lighter or darker than the floors/walls), a white or you could probably find some colors that would harmonize nicely with your counter, say something in a cool sage or the buff direction...

Be sure to add some nice handles/pulls at the same time, which will update the feel of the cabinets.

You should choose your backsplash first and then coordinate the color of your cabinets. Don't let the tail wag the dog.

I like the current color of your cabinets.

If that's your current combo, I wouldn't touch it. Dark brown is so good at hiding dirt and smudges and it doesn't look trendy like painted grey.

I think the cabinet color is chosen to go with the counter and IMO backsplash is like choosing which earrings to wear it is the finishing touch .I am not in love with the backsplash you have so I would choose the replacement last

The counter and backsplash look newer and go well together - the whole kitchen looks fine. Do you want to paint to lighten up the space?

I don't usually recommend painting wood, but if the area is dark, go with white with the gray walls. You could go gray, but then your walls might need to be lightened up if the space becomes too gray.

If you were remodeling a kitchen from scratch, the backsplash comes last, but if you bought a kitchen which already included some updates and you just are thinking about changing the cabinet color, look for colors in you countertop (grays, whites) and consider those.

(I've noticed lately that sometimes people are answering one dilemma and it shows up on the wrong dilemma.)

If you are keeping the current backsplash, try white or grey cabinets. Here are a few of our designs to help you envision what it might look like when you are finished.
