I have a FL - I use handwash cycle but my 100% cotton sweaters come out stiff. I use ALL Free and Clear

    Powder or liquid?

If its the powder it could be too much carbonate residue...do you use the slower spin speed?

    FABRIC SOFTENER :)

Liquid since I was told not to use powder, which I have always preferred, when I bought it. Don't use soft ER it drives my allergies crazy

Sounds like too much detergent. Try using less detergent and increase number of rinses. I only use the low speed for spinning sweaters. Tip. Try using no spin up til you get to the final rinse and then spin out on low. This will minimize stretching. Unless the sweater is really dirty, I use LeBlanc unscented lingerie soap for sweaters. In my soft water, it does a great job with just a little soap. I also have allergies. Good luck.

For a while I was using ammonia on my sweaters without detergent or softeners. It worked great with no stains on the sweaters.

Interesting, mama. Most of them are either blends or cotton. I have tried it on fleece blankets as well and the results were great! Won't use it on wool anymore!

chris, I read last night on a diaper blog site that All Free Clear liquid has an ingredient (can't remember if it is an enzyme or not) that coats fibers so that they are repellent (to dust mites, for example) and stiff, which would make it not great for softness. I was stunned. This site liked Tide Free because it did not have this ingredient. I don't know if this is true, but I will never use All Free Clear liquid again.

I think the trick for cotton sweaters is to run them in the dryer on low for about five minutes. This is not enough to dry them, but it softens them up and knocks most of the wrinkles out. Then you either hang them to dry or lay them flat on something to dry.

ITA with hisown. I always dry my cotton knit clothes and cotton sweaters (done this for years) on the lowest dryer setting for 5-10 minutes , then let them air dry on a rack. Something about the dryer softens them up.

My son Michael is 6ft7in...he has a hard time finding clothes in length like sweaters and shirts that fit his long thin body. He has a few beautiful 100% cotton knit sweaters that he warns me never to put in the dryer lol. They come out of the washer stretched out and lopsided...of course I sneak them in the dryer for about 10 minutes on *less dry* than I room dry them than back on Less dry for close to 10 minutes. .works every time. Back in shape and nice and soft.
