Need advice Kitchen island dimensions

I'm remodeling my kitchen and am stuck on the following...

Would you rather have a kitchen island with:

- 34" x 85" island with 42" walkways (counter edge to edge) on either side

OR

- 37" x 85" island with 40" walkways (counter edge to edge) on either side??

Kitchen is 14' x 19'.

Farmhouse sink projecting 1.5" into walkway and dishwasher are located on the east side of the island.

Wolf Range is located on the west side of the island, with knobs projecting 3-4" into the walkway.

Island will only be used for prep (no second sink).

French door fridge is located on the north end of the island -- 40" from island counter edge.

Kitchen table is located on the south end of the island -- 50" from island counter edge.

Would love to hear from folks with similar layouts.

Thanks!

a picture is worth a lot of your words.

42" is best, 40" is fine for non traffic paths. if you have family members walking *through* the kitchen from point A to B, passing fridge, dishwasher, or oven, you want more space, i'd say 48"

Preliminary floor plan attached. Island length and some other items have changed but this shows the basic layout. I'm concerned a narrow island at 34" (counter to counter on island) looks a little disproportional to the kitchen --- yet this preserves 42" walkways. Increasing island to 37" (counter to counter) results in 40.5" walkways. Appreciate your advice. Thanks

well i just got up and measured my distances and all are 40 or under with different things sticking out, I think you are good with the bigger island

That is a Barrier Island. It is In Your Way. Draw the triangle between the holy trinity of sink, range, and fridge. Nothing should protrude into that.

This kitchen would function better with a peninsula. Or a different layout entirely. People need to come far too deep into your work space to access the fridge. Fridges belong on the edge of the work triangle, so that those outside the work zone can access them without interruption. The leg between sink and range should never have to cross a high traffic path. Having seating backing up to a range is ridiculously unsafe.

You need a kitchen designer. One who actually cooks.

A few problems with this layout for sure , a KD now will save a lot of trouble later IMO a narrow long island can work but I always want my clients to imagine preparing a meal in what it is they WANT.Seating at the island inside the work triangle never works unless the aisle is huge . IMO all your prep will be done beside the sink , makes no sense to prep on island and have to constantly turn around to wash veggies etc.I don’t see pantry space anywhere in this space which to me is an essential part of a good kitchen plan . Just because you can physically fit an island does not mean you should have one get a good KD to help make this awesome

One rough cut and paste option.

The island looks rather large to me and I wonder if you won't end up feeling it is in the way. Think about reducing the length a little and then turning it 90 degrees, this would free the kitchen work area so you can move freely about. I don't know what the kitchen is extending into but if it is a larger room why the need for a kitchen table? You could extend the front part of the island countertop and put stools under for kitchen seating.
