Dark and light woods can work well together. I understand that the honey/yellow of the wood in this picture would be off putting as it is outdated. Can you stain or bleach it? Even turning it grey would be very dramatic.

Sure you can change the paneling. PLEASE! Perhap a light weathered grey for your paneling? Stained not painted, remember whatever finish you choose for oak you will always see the grain so work with it. Please hire a professional to do the work. Whatever style you decide to go with you need to tone down on all the matchie matchie. Contrast with tones and style, perhaps go crazy and get yourself a completely modern desk.

If it were my room I think I would have the panelling painted white. I think you have a lovely room and it will be just great once you paint or restain the wood

I love painted paneling & woodwork ! I would paint it all a satin off white. If you love that look go for it ! Then use your dark wood for your furnishings that you love so much. Giving you a bright room.
