Bed Sheet recommendations please!

I've loved my vintage, light silver sage Restoration Hardware Italian Sateen sheets. However the fitted bottom sheets weren't made to cover a thick boxspring mattress and with all of the stretching, the fitted sheet corners are destroyed. The rest of the material is perfect and lovely smooth and soft.

Since Restoration doesn't remotely make this color any longer, I'm off on a search for another brand of bottom sheet (not a set) that will feel equally as good. We do have two other sheet sets, but they don't compare to the RH ones.

What brand can you suggest to replace or blend in. A soft cocoa would be lovely with the light silver sage and the chocolate brown silk drapes.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

SDH Legna makes the softest silkiest sheets I've tried. It resembles a silk but isn't and washes well. They have some nice soft colors too. They are pretty pricey, but it's only one sheet so you may be ok if you can't find something else you like as much as RH.

Compumom. I'm sorry, wish I could help but I only really deal with vintage percales. I'm not even sure I've seen anyone talk much about sateen sheets here. Are they the ones that are buttery smooth?

I'm not sure of the difference between percale and sateen. Will you educate me?

I'm also not familiar with SDH, although I see it's carried by several high end stores in my area. The review on Amazon isn't stellar for at least one of their types of sheet. Two people reported wear issues within one year and SDH denying responsibility. That's not cool! My RH sheets are probably 9 yrs old and are in the rotation at least once a month and other than the corners tearing from overstretching, they're still in perfect condition.

Wamsutta used to make excellent Sateen sheets. Bed Bath and Beyond or Macy's.

Sateen has a little shine to it usually.. more soft and silky.. a little slippery

Percale is more of a plain cotton that feels crisp... like what a man's dress shirt would be.

I love love love my Legna, but yes, it's probably not be as sturdy/long lasting as others. I love it because it feels like 100% silk sheets.

Having said that, I prefer percale to sateen. I have percale sheets from Sferra which are great, but the trim on those never lasts too long either (the sheets themselves do, but my hemstitching always rips). In my experience, they have good customer service.

Someone else might have a more scientific answer but that should get you started. You may already have percale and not even know it.

You're right, i might have percale. I definitely recall my mother using percale in the 60's and 70's.

Compumom I think I know the type of sheet you are looking for. I buy sheets made from beech tree at Bed Bath and Beyond. I learned on this forum that anything made with bamboo, beech tree etc. is actually rayon. They have many colors. The sheets are silky and yes the fitted sheet wears out much faster than the top sheet. Once on clearance at BB&B I found beech tree sheets with a 15% mix of silk. I use those the most. They are wonderful, but boy do they stretch on the bed after a few night. I also learned not to use any detergent with enzymes on my sheets with silk. I don't know if that includes rayon.

    Sferra are wonderful:

I've had sferra on all my beds for the last several years. They wash beautifully and have a great hand. Their basic line comes in a number of colors.

They look marvelous, but I gulped at the price of a fitted sheet! I did register my email, so I'll wait for a sale or a coupon! Thanks!

Does anyone have any experience with Brooklinen? I've been intrigued by their ads.

L.L. Bean has some really nice sheets. I am very particular about my bed linens, and I have been getting sheets from them for over 5 years now.

I have to say, I have not been happy with my Sferra sheets. Very rough. Good luck with their blankets, though. One of their lesser lines -- 1888? -- is coming from China now, I've heard. I do like Frette, which can sometimes be found on eBay. But the set my husband strongly prefers are sateen from Linen Source! I have a new set from Cuddledown I think we will love -- bought a complete bedding suit from them -- but awaiting remodel. Pinky likes vintage linen, and has had smashing good luck buying it at charity shops and yard sales. THAT is my goal -- find old Wamasutta on eBay!

Jane/R.G. many thanks for the concise description of the different fabrics and the best country of manufacture. My RH sheets were manufactured in Italy, and I would agree that they are drapey and soft. I had previously read that thread count was a falsehood so I wasn't paying much attention to those claims.

I am curious-- which type of sheet did you buy from Perfect Linen? I was viewing the "Eternally Drapeful" sheets. They look lovely (and a bit retro), just wish I could touch them prior to purchase. I will also check out Cuddledown's offerings. No question that we are always pleased when traveling and sleeping on Frette bedding so that's another option. I'll keep an eye on ebay to see if any new Italian sateen sheets become available too. RH sheets are still Italian cotton, but I'll have to give us the idea of finding anymore packages of silver sage color. No matter since the depth of the fitted sheet isn't deep enough for our mattress.

Last spring when we were in London we encountered a lovely linen shop that offered fine bespoke bedding. Over my husband's protestations, I dismissed ordering a set. DUMB move! Now I found them online and will check out their pricing. It's calledhttp://lblondon.com/

compumom, you might be interested to know that RH sheets are sold at Overstock under the Malouf brand. I have the Clean & Crisp bedding, and it is a dead ringer. Take a look and see what you think. They still have the silver sage color, but you'll have to get the whole set: https://www.overstock.com/search?keywords=Malouf&SearchType=Header

@compumom- I got the Second Skin.sateen, made in Portugal, with lovely embroidered detail. Normally I prefer percale to sateen but I love this set. It's also on sale right now if it interests you.

Funny how everyone has different opinions. I got a set of Frette sateen sheets for my wedding shower. Fabulous gray color but they were not hard wearing. Literally frayed at the edges. That was my first set of premium brand sheets but no love here for Frette.

It's very individual and hard to preview. Also, I find that bed linens temper over time. It's difficult to make judgments about how they will feel until they have been washed at least 10 and, better yet, 20 times.

Agreed! My DH never wants me to buy new sheets because the older ones feel so much better!

MizLizzie, the silver sage Malouf sheets say Made in China. RH's were made in Italy.

I had some time to hang out in Bloomingdales linen department today. I bought some house brand sheets that felt really nice. Not sure if they'll fit my mattress, but the price was incredible, they felt really nice and if they don't work, they'll be returned in a jiffy! I did check out Frette and Sfera along with a few others. As directed, I skipped the ones made in China, Pakistan and India!

I miss Wamsutta. I used to get all my bed sheets from them.

"Not sure if they'll fit my mattress,"

In general today, sheets are made 14" deep for standard mattresses and 17" deep for pillowtop mattresses. No rhyme or reason I can determine.

Always good to know mattress depth off hand.

So much for my great find, Today's Bloomie's email announced that they were out of stock and my order was cancelled. Back to the search-- today I hit up Homegoods to find their meager selection was made in India or Pakistan. Sigh...

@Jody, you can still get Wamsutta sheets at Bed Bath and Beyond. That's really all I buy. I particularly like the Damask stripped ones. May not be the same as the older ones but still are a great sheet.

@undercover sheets - seriously? Someone is supposed to fund a business that doesn't exist in order to get sheets that don't exist. Fascinating.

I'd ask Restoration Hardware if they don't have deeper fitted sheets by now. Everyone does. Tell them your dilemma. They won't want to lose your business.
