Thanks chiflipper. Removing the 4" was already planned, I was trying to keep it short in my description. We were thinking a lighter, matte type finish, as opposed to glass, in a 3 x 9 or bigger /longer.
Interesting about removing the trim... you mean all of it? Or just the underneath trim?

Depends on how high you plan to carry the tile as to what needs back-cutting. A matte finish tile would be perfect. I forgot to mention porcelain for tile material. I would not recommend this as a DIY project because of all the cuts to be made. A great tiler has to be very good at math because you don't want a bunch of "sliver cuts". Go to a tile shop, not a big box store. Tell them you want them to do the whole thing (carpentry / tiling / electric.) Yep, electric...those wall outlets will have to be re-set (pulled forward). I suggest you check out new receptacles and covers. Bring a piece of that 4 inch backsplash and a couple of colors of receptacle covers (available at Home Depot / Lowe's) to bring with when shopping for tile. It's those "finishing touches" that really make a difference.

We've got the same type of granite in our kitchen, although the cabinets are lighter. We decided to go with a stainless tile, and it turned out awesome! You may not want to use one as contemporary as ours, but it would help reflect light from your under cabinet lighting in the corners where it's dark. We did this ourselves as well, it wasn't too difficult. :) Just a new thought for you anyway. Good luck!

Hi sunny! Your granite and countertops are gorgeous. I am not sure it is necessary to remove the window molding because if you ever decide to change it, then you are stuck. I would tile around it. Here are ours.

I forgot, I would go with a red undertone cream, not a yellow undertone cream. Bring home samples and see them at various times during the day.

Yes, we are not quite ready, but starting to gather ideas of color and style. The granite came with the house which is only a year or so old.
