If you are not a patient an experienced DIY person I do recommend at least getting quotes from a cabinet painter. He / she can take the doors to their shop and have them sprayed in a dust free environment and some have access to finishes that the DIY person does not. It can be expensive. The good news is that maple paints up pretty well - much better than oak. Whether done DIY or by a professional, a painted over previously stained surface is usually not as durable as a factory finish. However, many people have reported on this forum that their professionally painted cabinets have held up well.

Wood does move with changes in temp and humidity. This can cause hairline cracks at the joints. Usually, factory painted cabinets are MDF or MDF and wood combos because this has more stability and less tendency to move. So you could need to do some upkeep or at least be aware that this happens. These cracks in the paint are small and not usually very noticeable. They are often not worth touching up unless they get noticeable because they will often return with the change of seasons. In part whether this is a potential problem depends on your door style. Ask the painter what to expect.

I totally agree with the above comment. Start with quotes from painters and ask them their process. What do they do to prepare the cabinets, what paint do they suggest, etc.

Although there are many pictures on Pinterest that show painted kitchen cabinets, what they don't show is the fine detail (or a close up) of those cabinets. I have had cabinets sprayed before for clients and there is a lot of prep work involved prior to spraying. They do turn out fantastic and are a great way to update without refacing or replacing the cabinets.
