If there are doorways into the space it sounds like it is just a small foyer? Is this correct? How old is the home? Adding a nice light fixture and possibly bead board or paneling may add interest. If you had a layout or photographs those would be helpful. I've attached pictures of the kinds of 'trim packages' you could install to add a custom touch... Again not sure of the age or style of your home...

Right side of the door, the opening on the left leads to the kitchen and opening on the right leads to the dining area. The wall on the left begins where the door hinges are on the opposite side

This is one of those layouts that makes you think the architect should have been fired. I share your frustration, because there isn't a great option here. In posh hotels, they would put a round table with an expensive flower arrangement in the middle of this area - though honestly I don't know what good that is supposed to be, either.

Could you turn on the lights and take a reverse picture?

Can you change the wall locations? It looks like this might be a an apartment? You could add some sort of coat closet if you didn't already have one. Not sure about furniture or placements.
