Can anyone tell me what this is called? I have only seen it in this magazine pic

Magazines often have purchasing info on the back pages--check to see if the tiles are listed. That looks like textured glass.

Might also be Moroccan zellige tile. Beautiful stuff. http://blog.cletile.com/tile-collections/zellige

Mother of Pearl is the only way I could think of to describe it. Unfortunately the picture came from an issue of Consumer Reports and not a regular Kitchen magazine so they don't list what it is. It's actually in the section on countertops.

Pearl Shell possibly? The thing is I can only find pictures of the style tile in 1 inch squares or there about

I searched briefly using opalescent tile and iridescent tile. Found some similar, though not exact, through Google and this one on Houzz shop.

My vote still goes for zellige.

Definitely what AvatarWalt posted. It looks like an exact match.

i also think it is zellige. totally dreamy. my guess they took a pic in a very bright light so it's even more iridescent. also, these magazine pages are glossy, adds more shine.

I'd never heard of zellige, but that could be it: Zellige tiles are a Moroccan glazed terra cota tile that can be cut into
different shapes -- from the most popular shape of square to trellis,
or rectangular subway tiles. Many homes are combining this 1,000 year
old Moroccan art form with the minimalist and organic modern movement.

Why you'll be seeing zellige tile everywhere in 2016./Woods and Weaves

Is the area under the counter tiled, too?

OK, second link Avatarwalt provided looks like exactly what it is. The pics in the first link looked duller. Thanks!

No, under the counter is just cabinets. The pic is weird because it's a close up and on two pages

Clé makes a Zellige tile in white small squares just like this. Eam hates it. ;) I love it.

I love them. After looking at 1000's of kitchen photos these are one of maybe 3 that I REALLY liked. Of course they are hard to find and expensive

They're not so hard to find..Clé has them, Ann Sacks has some, Emery et Cie has some wonderful ones to the best of my memory(they are in Europe though. which is bad on one hand. but good on the other-no VAT))..I'm sure there are more, don't recall the brands right now, but I'm into tile so I encountered them a lot while searching and deciding. They're expensive, that's very true. all the tiles i really liked were expensive to unimaginable expensive.

This is my first kitchen remodel so I haven't heard of any of those vendors until today. I did a search and there were not that many places that popped up.

That's understandable. It's also easier to find a mall than say, a boutique.

Internet helps..I didn't visit Houzz until recently, I didn't know about these forums too.. but I had Pinterest..:)

we live between LA and San Diego..so there were only four brick and mortar stores where they sold very nice to exquisite tiles. And it took us some time to find these. And one of these four didn't have one tile that was under 100 dollar per sq foot..it was so gorgeously out of reach it was intimidating, and as much as I like to look at the tiles, whether I buy them or not-I felt bad returning there..:)
