The phrase "farmhouse", modern farmhouse, industrial farmhouse, rustic farmhouse, eclectic farmhouse. A true rustic farmhouse would be one with a dirt floor, wood stove, outhouse and a straw stuffed mattress.

Everyone wanting to repaint their beautiful wood cabinets white. I mean I get wanting to paint over orangey ugly ones, but so many people see wood cabs and feel like painting them white to be no be outdated, not realizing there's so much more to a kitchen.

The trend of spelling the word 'dining' incorrectly. I've ground my teeth so often reading the misspelling of this word on Houzz I'm almost down to stumps!

suedonim took the words right out of my mouth: sick of all things "farmhouse." Also sick to death of everything chalk painted all the time always. Oversized clocks, word art of any kind (Keep Calm and... stop putting words on everything!), vinyl decals, chevron. House flipping tv shows where the "designer" has only ever had one idea: "Knock down these walls and paint everything gray!"

Now Debbi, I have been planning my kitchen for 30 years!! I finally got to have a white one. Let me enjoy my white subway tile!!

123, I chose a white kitchen with white subway tile and I put my color in with my accessories. And boy did I put in color!!

Once upon a time, painting kitchen cabinets white only happened when builders used inferior materials for cabinetry. Amazing how people began to think that was style...Shaker cabinets are like going into a big box stores and ordering what everybody else has on the cheap. Sick of granite, grey, silver, geometric patterns, hollow core doors, and stained concrete.

My pet peeve is multi-colored stacked glass mosaic tile. I was searching for a generic photo and found this abomination:

A lot of my furniture DID come from the curb and I could care less, solid walnut chairs what on earth are wrong with those? Better than going into the landfill.

As long as there are stone and similar countertops with lots of movement (and many are quite beautiful) there will be a need for a simple backsplash to go with them - I don't think subway tile is a trend.

My parents put in white cabinets and subway tile in their 1910 house over 20 years ago as to be more true to the vintage style of the house. This is not just something of the last few years

I dont think subway tile goes out per se, I think it's just that other styles come in.

Its like pearls and a cardigan sweater set. It may not be the trendiest outfit but it always looks classic.

I'm with you DC. If you style it properly, anything can look good. I am a bit weary of 3x6 white subway tiles, but I don't hate them.

I'd like to know who made oversized, fake leather matching sofa and love seats a trend??? At least it appears so on Houzz based on the number of dilemmas posted with these pieces. Please people stop purchasing them. These are so wrong on so many levels and they really aren't a trend no matter what your husband tells you!

Taking nice homes and adding less luxurious finishes--splintery wood, fake bricks, to make them look like a warehouse/barnyard. It is the "derelicte" of decorating!

Or how about wallpaper that looks like brick or wood- yeck. And Pool Habit, nice homes the owners call it faux bricks-like that makes it "right"-lol.

Any word followed by "chic" (what the heck is industrial/rustic chic anyway) and also the term "good bones." And I know it's not a trend, but twenty-somethings who think they have to have granite/quartz and real hardwood floors. Those finishes have to be EARNED with hard work, sacrifice, and formica and laminate lol.

Open concept. I understand it would be nice to watch the living area when you have toddlers and need to cook dinner, but for any other stage of life you are stuck looking at dirty pots while you relax after dinner.
I want my kitchen to have access from the great room and a couple of seats, but I don't want my kitchen to be visible/hearable/smellable from my dining or living area.

@Helen I know someone who has one year old triplets. They sold their house and bought a new wide open one because they needed open concept so they could keep an eye on them while preparing meals. Only problem is they can't contain them anymore lol. So now she's madly hunting for some way to gate off the huge open area and in the meantime she's got three toddlers stumbling around the kitchen getting into things while she's cooking :). She wishes she never moved.

Oh tedbixby!! I'm so tacky. I have brick wallpaper I'm getting ready to hang in my master!! Just too horrible??? I think part of it's appeal is that it IS tacky!

Jansgirl - not sure your post belongs in "design trends", but I'll give you my 2 cents: it looks like the wall is something like plaster popcorn...the first question is whether wallpaper will adhere. The second is - what's wrong with paint? If you are going for a darker room, which would be nice, then why not paint the walls one color and the ceiling another with light trim around the windows?

Oh northface-thanks for the comment! I don't want a darker room per se. I want a loft! The wall does look like popcorn in the photo but is knock down texture. Here is the true story. I never got over the loft she lived in in "Flashdance"!

I love brick walls. I recently retired after owning a shop for twenty years and had wallpapered one of the walls there with this paper. People loved it and were surprised it was paper. In fact the texture added to the brick look and yes it adhered well. And w/ sizing the wall first-the paper was going to peel off easily. I'm thinking it is somewhat whimsical. Is it just tacky??!

No. It is not tacky. I like it...

jans girl if you love it go for it. Especially since it's in your bedroom. It just makes me laugh when a ranch, McMansion or other 100% drywall house is styled like it's a loft. In a contained room I think it's a lot better.

Oh great!!! I would have done it anyway but it's good to have a tad of validation! Thirty years ago, when dating, my husband and I day dreamed about an open loft we could roller skate in. I never outgrew it and I'm so thankful. (now, i would look down my nose at anyone that put up a mural of.....hmmmm maybe I wouldn't!)
