Big Change!

Hello All!
I recently got remarried (by Elvis at a drive-thru window in Vegas, ha!) and will be moving to the UK soon... any advice/suggestions for laundry habits there?

Im really looking forward to all kinds of new detergents and machines! :-D
Im really excited to have a machine that lets me pick the wash temp, woohoo! No more dumbed down "hot" water!

My new husband, bless his heart, has been washing everything in cold on the quickwash cycle without sorting anything. His white socks are actually a blue-gray, terrible....

What products and brands should I check out? Which ones should I avoid?

Congrats!!! Is your hubby British, or did one of you get a job in the UK?

You will love Ariel gel (liquid) for colors and darks, and Ariel powder or powder tabs for whites and very lights!

I've been having very good results using enzyme free detergent on my sheets and towels. They have been coming out much smoother and softer.

LEARN this in the UK....Bio detergents have enzymes!! Non-bio detergents are enzyme free!!

Congrats Andi...I wish you a lifetime of happiness ..Oh to be young again and full of energy and hormones Haha.

Keep in touch with us please.

Larsi, good thinking, sheets don't need enzymes anyway unless your eating in bed. They only need a good surfactant, hot water, and oxygen bleach occasionally if they are white.

    Congratulations!

I don't know if you'll learn much here since you know a lot already, I suppose. Personally, I don't really experiment with detergents anymore. I would stick with either Persil (in the UK it's made by Unilever) or Ariel. They simply get the job done. In Germany, a lot of the cheap store brands are also excellent - I guess the same could be true for the UK as well.

You really only need three detergents: a powder for whites, a powder or liquid for "colours" and something for delicates. I have never needed boosters. Last weekend I had the... pleasure... to wash bibs that were encrusted with chicken/pasta/zucchini/orange juice/oil puree and sat in the hamper for a week. A long cold to 140F wash and plain powdered detergent brought them back to white.

Do you already know what washer you'll be using?

Enduring, thank you! Is Leblanc available in the UK?

    Practigal, thank you!

Larsi, Mike is British... he's got a young daughter that he doesn't want to leave and it was easier for me to get my boys over there.

Mama, thank you! Young? not sure about that LOL I certainly don't feel young anymore. I've always washed sheets and towels with an enzyme detergent... I'll try without and see if I notice a difference. Maybe if they're softer, I can stop using LFS.

Whirlpool, thank you! I've always lived in places that have hard to ridiculously hard water... Im moving to the island of Guernsey and the water is very soft. I know that my laundry habits will need to change a bit because of it, just not sure exactly how. You're in Germany right? Is your water hard or soft? Im not sure what washer I'll be using, with him being single and living alone and washing everything together on cold, Im sure it's not anything top of the line haha

I asked what washer he has, he said he thinks its a hotpoint aquarius or something like that... it came with his flat. I do know that its a combo washer/dryer and it's soooooo loud during the spin so now Im going to be looking for something else. Any suggestions?

My water is hard well water (25 grains) so I am using a water softening powder along with the detergent. If your water will be soft, you just have to the minimum amount of detergent according to the instructions - and maybe an extra rinse because soft water doesn't rinse soap out too well. And you can also enjoy much less cleaning in the bathroom!

A Hotpoint? Aha. Well, they used to be Made an Great Britain and people associated them with quality. Neither is true anymore. If I had to buy a washer today, I would go for a Bosch/Siemens. Mieles are also very nice, but twice the price of a similarly equipped Bosch because Miele appliances must be sold at the MSRP.

Alex are Mieles cheaper in the UK than in the US?
