is that in a basement dwelling area ?? if so, i have a similar wall like that in the basement and we were like wth is that and later found out it was the sump pump.

if u habe floor plans, it might just be a random wall or something else that might be important so id research before tearing it down. but if its nothing, i think you could use it for storage.

for now, why dont u paint it apretty teal or wallpaper it. it looks like there is a few inches where you could get a vertical storage system for cans , which would fit perfectly..

I think you are using the depth already for the wall rack, and there's probably some part of the mechanicals under there, so not much more to claim.

The box is there for a reason. Think why would the builder go to the trouble of building this box in a closet if it wasn't covering something?

Use the top shelves for light weight items like the paper towels. At least if they fall they won't break or crush your toes.
