Hardwood vs. Carpet steps - am I being stupid?

We currently have fully-carpeted steps in our house and we hate the look of them, hate the carpet color, hate vacuuming them, etc.. I want to install hardwood on the steps, but we've got dogs, so we'd have to put a runner down the steps. Is that a big waste of money to put in wood treads & risers that we'll only see 1/4 of?

Depends on how much you value the change and if you have to rework the stairs to bring them up to code if you change them. You'll still have to vacuum the runner, too. Get an estimate for the work so you can think about it. Maybe just changing the existing carpet (and maybe a lighter vacuum for stairs) would be enough of a change.
