We use a finely tuned table saw to carefully cut two 45 degree angles the full length of each board, yes! We also add biscuits as needed to limit movement at the joint, gluing those and the mitered surfaces all together to box in the collar ties underneath. This final cladding typically needs to be shimmed against the 2x lumber to allow the mitre joints to align as well. Sharp hand tools are important for finishing the joint as well --since we want it to appear like a solid beam edge and sanding can reshape the outside edges too much. In this example we wrapped the collar ties on three sides leaving the top open so we could recess some LED strip lights into the pocket that was created above. Hope that helps!
