Help

i grow several tree roses in pots that I overwinter in the garage. I have had great success with this for many years. They usually stay dormant in my cold garage where temp is 30-40. This week, I noticed many are showing substantial leafing out! I have at least six more weeks until I can even think about bringing them out and usually drag them back and forth until May. My instinct is to pinch off this new growth to conserve energy. I am in Chicago.

I have no idea but I'm bumping this up. Maybe someone who knows will see it.

I wouldn't pinch that growth off. There's a chance the roses would try and replace it, wasting a lot of energy.

I would suggest you monitor the soil moisture level; your roses may need some watering to keep the soil from drying out.

    How long are the shoots?

I am having the same problem in New England and it's because it has been very warm. I watered mine and I think they will never go dormant this winter.

I know it is warm weather related. I water throughly once a month. Just concerned about the false start .

Oh no, poor babies. Maybe you can put them closer to the door or somewhere where the temps are colder where they will either grow slower or go back into dormancy (is that a thing?).

I have no experience with this, but I know cold slows down growth. You might be able to slow them down enough to buy you the time you need to set them out a little early. You can set them out during the day and bring them in at night on warmer days. Or set them out with a little protection so you don't loose the new growth/energy.

Another option is to put them under florescent lights in the garage so that if they do leaf out, they at least can get some light and maybe they will do ok once they get outside. I grow my seedlings inside for about 6 weeks before putting them in the garden (mostly to avoid the intense heat LOL) but they live under florescent lights for a while, sometimes even blooming under them until temps are cool enough for the tender seedlings to survive outdoors.

I have 49 rose trees in pots, they're all in the garage, and couple of PJPII even have blooms on them without any light! They had buds on them when I moved them in the garage, but that was the end of Nov last year. I can't move them in and out daily, that would be too much work for me. They will be fine without doing anything extra, just water them once a month. I normally move mine out in April. I am in zone 6a.

    Sorry, It's 39 not 49. Had a typo.....

Oh, you people and all your warm weather (gnashing teeth here); please share some with the frigid mountain West. But best of luck with the tree roses, and show us some photos in the spring. That includes you, summers-ha. Forty nine tree roses in pots! Diane

Sorry, I had a typo, I have 39 rose trees, not 49. :-) I started with 25 about 3 years ago (after I lost all my rose trees to a cold winter, I put them in 2 garden sheds for the winter months, they were about 40 rose trees in total, that winter was too cold for them). Last year I bought 14 more from JP's bargain sale, so the total is 39.

    That's beautiful tree there!

Summer, have you ever seen the rolling stands at Home Depot. They have saved my back. Hold hundreds of pounds, look good, and not expensive.

Pjp 2 is my favorite white. One that doesn't like my Chicago winter.

my second favorite white tree is white majesty. Summer memories, too

Beautiful trees! I lost 2 PJPII in the garden due to the cold winter here, now I grow them in pots same as you. Where did you find your trees?

Regan in Fremont California. Used to carry a zillion but they moved to a smaller location and have downsized. Got mariotta from palatine and a few from Austin. I have killed many, too.
