The problem that sometimes occurs with gray walls and cream trim is that the gray can make the cream look like dirty white. You may have to play around with several different grays to find the right one that works. I can't speak for all areas but in the northwest, we are doing very little cream trim.

I have to disagree. I think gray walls with cream or ivory or off-white trim can be a beautiful combination. There are so many different grays. I would hold up samples of the colors you are considering next to the trim in different lights to see the effect. But I have seen this combination used very successfully, especially in older and historic houses where stark white trim sometimes looks too contemporary.

I'm doing the same to my house but I'm a visual person anyone have pics of what gray and cream or white looks like together?

I think it depends on the severity of the cream if its to yellow it might look funny whites work with gray or off whites with very little yellow undertone

This is a dilemma that can really only be resolved with the grey paint in hand and tested next to the cream in question... so many factors can affect the final outcome: 1) light 2) orientation 3) surface etc etc

Thank you all!!! "feeny" The pic is beautiful! Unfortunately, our cream is pretty dark. It isn't the slightly off white that is used most often in new homes. I guess the best test is to get some samples and see what we think. Any suggestions on Gray paint colors you all have liked?

Going out on a hunch you might have oil base painted trim which yellowed over time and when that happens it takes on a color of its own it can very from room to room darker in areas and lighter in others .here are some grays. i say paint the trim with new white of your choice

Yes, I think if the trim is really a deep yellow-cream it can be much trickier. Our trim is an off-white/ ivory (with brown instead of yellow undertones), and it has worked well with colors like BM Gray Horse (a blue-green gray), SW Urban Putty (a taupey-gray), and SW Light French Gray.

This is so helpful. I have the same dilemma and in our home, trying to work with the cream trim and wishing I could get rid of it and the builder beige (Pittsburgh Paints Spiced Vinegar) throughout our 3700 square foot home. The quotes to repaint are high, especially since we have two story ceilings in some of the rooms, so they'd need scaffolding. truthfully, I 'd love to do all white throughout the main areas and with our dark floors. Trying to rationalize the investment.

i have cream ceiling and revere pewter grey. i like it, but second guess myself after reading comments about the color combo!

Check BM's Edgecomb Gray...one of the colors Rockin' Fine Finish posted. I like it with a soft white trim, such as BM's Simply White.

I think it will work, but I would try to seek out greys that fall into the warm neutral category.

may I ask why you see the need to pick out so many different greys? I understand that if you have diverse furnishings in each room, but if you dont, then I think that you will be creating yourself an unnecessary headache by trying to decided on multiple greys. I'm a "more is less" kind of person.

I have the cream walls and want to do gray walls. I'm so happy you posted your pic! We were about to try painting our ceilings white, but since our ceilings are about 22 ft high, I can't imagine needing to! Plus, our house is very rustic, and I'm scared the white ceilings will look to modern. Especially since one entire wall is cream-toned limestone! Thoughts?

Now it’s a 5 year old post, and I’d love to know the paint colors in the picture Feeny posted! :) its a beautiful room and I’m struggling with how to improve my cream trim and dark beige walls!

When we moved into our house 8 years ago our basement had gray walls with cream trim. We thought it was beautiful and still do. I am currently repainting it SW Mindful Gray and color matching the cream trim. Worked then, still works. If you like it, that's all that matters.

Dealing with this now. Just moved into a home with cream trim. I think I am leaning to white/off white walls with the cream trim. The more I see it the more I like it. Examples:

Bumping this thread. I have SW Creamy trim and antique white kitchen cabinets. Every off white I put near those cabinets turns gray and I don’t like the look.

Our house was cream on top of cream trimmed with more cream 🙄 This was our second attempt of gray after our kitchen remodel. I think with the right curtains it’ll blend well.

I bought a house with cream trim and cream plantation shutters throughout the home and painted the walls grey. I struggled with it at first thinking it would look terrible since I couldn’t paint the trim white because of the cream shutters but now I think the combo looks nice. I used SW light French grey.

Revere Pewter looks lovely with creamy trim.
