I think I'd do a charcoal gray paint on the bricks and one of those chunky barn wood type beams for the mantle and stain it to match the floor color.

The fireplace wall would benefit from a uniform colour. Declutter the mantel, and move the blonde cabinet elsewhere. Built-in units to window sill height would create a more co-ordinated space.

I would definitely either paint out the brick if your style is more transitional, or replace the brick with a larger format 12"x24" tile in a colour that works with your overall colour palette, if you want me contemporary. The mantel should be replaced with either the barnwood idea mentioned for more relaxed look or add a clean steel one for contemporary, or no mantel at all. If you like some of the warmer griege/grey colours that are more popular now, this tile might be nice -placing in a vertical direction gives more height to the room. A large scale painting in similar size to the window on the left will balance the space nicely. Large area carpet 8'x10' ( don't skimp on size).

I would not commit to painting it right away. Definitely try the whitewash first. It's an easy, inexpensive DIY job that only takes a few hours. It will tone down the pink significantly. If you don't like it, then you can paint.
