Help! Living room doesn't look right

Hi Everyone! I need help. My living room just looks "off" and I need some suggestions. Do I need a bigger rug? This is a NYC apartment, so space is limited (hence the positioning of the TV.. that can't move) next to the couch is a door to a bedroom so where the couch ends is basically the door way, it can't me moved center. it's also only 76 inches long, so it's not a lot of room.

I'm also open to new coffee tables, or a new rug or a new couch even! Suggestions all around. i just feel it looks not quite right. I normally have the couch up against the wall and the rug is scooted back as well so everything falls farther to the left. I did this positioning today to see if it would help (could I add a table behind the couch?) but not sure tit will. THANK YOU!

Bad location for the floor lamp.............right in the way of the view. Better to light the corner next to the sofa

When I look at the room the first thing I see is the red table, I would put the red table in between the two chairs. I would also space out the chairs and table more. I would move the floor lamp to the left corner. Also you could definitely do a sofa table behind the couch. Keep in mind while shopping for a sofa table the height of your couch (including the back cushions) so you and your guest can see the decor you place on the table!

I just looked at the photo again - are you sure you can't move the TV closer to the window, where the dark wood piece is now?

If you could do that, and mount the TV so it could be angled, then you could have the sofa facing the view. It looks like the room is plenty long enough to to do that, and have room for a console behind the sofa - something very transitional - maybe a lacquered or raffia piece - don't add any more wood. In fact, if you went with this positioning, I would consider removing on of the wood pieces, and put the other one where the TV is now.

Can you watch the TV from the chairs, i.e. flipping the layout you have? The sofa has very high arms and form a visual "barrier" when you walk in whereas the chairs have low arms and don't look as deep as the sofa. Am I right that you have to scoot by the sofa to get to the bedroom? Who dreams up these configurations? A challenge for sure.

P.S. If you do have to walk through your living room to get to the bedroom, then maybe what you need are small, stackable side tables you can use as a coffee table as needed.

Snug the sofa against the wall. No point to the small dead space behind it and you dont need a table behind either, you need a different coffee table.. Tuck the standing lamp at window end alongside

Separate the chairs, and angle them, one with its back to the plant a bit. In fact, maybe lose the plant. Angle the other with its back to the dining end of the tv console.

For now.....put the cocktail within reach of sofa, but it is far too llght looking and too small for the visual weight of the furniture.

De clutter ALL the surfaces including the heat/ac. unit, under the tv...........all of it

Change the rug to something with more texture or even a pattern, and you could also try turning it to longer side ( left to right )

In fact, try the two red tables together in front and near the sofa for now, and take the cocktail out entirely. No junk on the red tables. Now.......start looking for new cocktail

Have you tried angling the sofa in the left corner of the room, with the rug following that angle? You could place a lamp on the far left of the radiator (I assume it goes all the way to the wall), and float the coffee table in front of the sofa. This gives you a way to watch tv and better access to the bedroom. Next, try placing one chair in front and a little left of your plant, with the floor lamp on its right side (the chest would then be in the background). I'd try the other chair and cute side table near the right corner of the rug, with the table placed on the left side (as you already have it). This configuration might allow for a small table on the left end of the sofa, where you could place another lamp. I might clean off the top of the chest and place a trio of tall, skinny vases or candles nearest the window. Good luck!

Looking at the pic again, I'd try the glass hurricanes atop the chest, and maybe one of your pieces of pottery, along with a coffee table book or two, on the cocktail table.

Put the tall lamp to the right of the sofa, move the small table between the chairs, and call it a day and enjoy that view.

Thank you everyone! A few notes...

    - The door to the guest bedroom is at the end of the couch (there's less than a 1 inch between the two) so moving the lamp unfortunately doesn't work as it there's just no room on either side of the couch. (see photo!)

    - I've played with moving the couch to face out towards the view), but the room feels too short for it, it looks odd and like it's floating in the middle of the room and that you are walking right into it. It's like the room is too long width wide and too short in depth and it makes the furniture look odd (annoying!)

    - I have traditional taste and while I live in a modern space, I can't afford to go buy all new modern furniture.

    - Our TV was originally above the wood chest but we ended up getting a new (larger TV) while I don't love that it's a focal point - it's an NYC apartment, so it's really the only place for it. The TV above the chest sort of ruined that vignette

    - Any recommendations for a coffee table? I'd love some recommendations!

-I'll try the angled couch idea so it's in the corner.

    Thank you everyone!

i would get rid of the floor lamp and get a table lamp instead and place it on the table inbetween 2 accent chairs.

also, the picture frames on the heater make the room look cluttered and like they dont belong there. can you put them anywhere else?

its a very nice room. i love your gallery wall and the sofa. but the other side of the room needs a little decluttering or at the least, a reorganizing so everything looks uniform.

&& for recommendations on coffee table what do you prefer.... glass, wood, metal...and you said traditional?

do you have any kids or dogs that might get hurt or break things?

just a fyi, since the room is narrow and small, try getting a circle or oval table to add diff shapes, give more space and not be too bulky. illusion.

here are 2 traditional yet classy small tables . one has space underneath so you have more space to put things away and declutter

Would it be possible to put up a wall lamp on the wall on the far end of the sofa instead of a floor lamp? That will be one less thing on the floor.
I think acrylic nesting tables as coffee table is a great idea.

Consider a beautiful wall-mounted lamp or a drop lamp to light the corner at the far end of the living room area. Then you could get rid of the floor lamp since the area is so small.

I think the only thing "off" is the red table. I agree it should be between the chairs. I think everything looks lovely as is.
