Love the stairs! Are they whole blocks of timber? and if so, what kind of wood is it?

The wood is mesquite. It's not a whole block; there is a substantial portion of the tread that is steel.

Hello kind folks at CG&S, I'm a photographer from Miami looking to redesign the staircase in our studio and I'm really digging your design. I understand that there is a substantial amount of the tread that is steel, but given the proper bracket, do you feel that I can do this with a solid 5" hunk of wood? Was there a specific engineering reason why you designed yours with so much steel underneath or was this a design choice?
