Compact washing machines

I'm talking less than 2 cu ft capacity for a top loader, roughly 20" square.

My main concern is whether or not I can wash a full size comforter in something that small. Or at least full size blankets, if not a comforter.

Please share your experience with these smaller washers.

I might consider a front loader of approximately those dimensions but the one small front loader I had any experience with was awful. It really didn't get anything clean and I was constantly having to clean the gasket.

Honestly I rarely fill up a full size washing machine these days, as just one person just doesn't generate loads that big. But I do still want to be able to wash my blankets.

I have a Miele 24" front loader and it will take a queen sized modest sized comforter. But not a thick one. Electrolux makes a 24" fl set too that have been liked.

Your looking for less than 2 cf in a top loader? I don't think you'd fit a twin comforter in that size let alone full..well maybe twin. 20" huh...isn't the smallest compact FL bigger than that?

In Europe, Miele makes compact top loaders...I have not seen one here though!

I used the danby portable top loader for awhile. It held a lot and cleaned well, but it was too small to spin much water out. Drying could take a long time. They sell separate spinners to deal with the problem.

Honestly I do not care how long drying takes. Currently I am drying things by hanging them in the bathroom, LOL! Even here in the desert I guarantee that takes longer to dry.

I have time. It's MONEY that is in short supply around here, LOL!

Magic Chef makes a 20" square top loader (1.6 cu ft) which allegedly will take full size bedding, not including comforters, but at least I can wash a blanket. Apparently. Other people do it.

Miele is way way out of my price range. I should have mentioned I am on a fixed (and fairly low) income.

One problem I am having with the teeny washers is that apparently I will have to mail-order them. Even Home Despot won't actually stock these, which is a shame. The biggest problem seems to be shipping damage as most places drop-ship them in the original carton only. Apparently WalMart packages the Magic Chef, at least, better (and it costs a little more consequently). If they are still selling them, that's probably the way to go.

I also looked at a combination washer/dryer (front loader) made by Edgestar. That's about $800, which is pricey, but the whole combobulation can fit under a kitchen counter and it uses a normal 115v outlet. However the reliability reports on it are very poor. And the more expensive LG version is a LOT more expensive. Plus - LG sucks pretty much across the board for all their products.

However - apparently Magic Chef ALSO makes a combo 2 cu ft washer/dryer that seems to be rated fairly well, around $700. So that may be an option. Where $700 is just too much for a washer only it is much more economical if it includes a dryer as well, all in a 24" square footprint. Again, shipping damage may be a concern, but I've not seen reports complaining of it - so maybe the original packaging for this is better than for the smaller 1.6 washer-only version.

I'm afraid of Danby/Haier/SPT brands as they seem to have low reliability - and despite Sears SAYING they will service the Danby brand that they sell, they actually WON'T, and finding someone to service it can be difficult to impossible. One guy ended up having to do the repair himself, and I'm past wanting to do that sort of work myself any more. I don't even work on my car anymore.

I've got a gas dryer in the garage (where the previous owner hooked it up) - Kenmore - that has something probably fairly simple wrong with it. I started to work on it - but I'm just not confident with that sort of repair any more. I'll probably give it away rather than deal with it. And yes, the previous owner had Sears out to fix it, and the fix lasted a few weeks. Had it been me, I'd have had them come out and REALLY fix it, but ... some people just don't know how to negotiate those kinds of problems.

So Magic Chef is looking pretty good for this at a price I can afford. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Or reviews of Magic Chef laundry appliances, also welcome.

Someone over on automaticwasher.org has one of these little washers. Unless I'm wrong it will only fit one small sheet at a time and no blankets

@mamapinky0 - WHICH little washer? The Magic Chef, at least, even the small 1.6 cu ft one, will take a full set of sheets. Well, full size sheets at least. Maybe not larger sizes.

    I think its a 1. something cf

Go to automaticwasher.org. under Delux its the thread titled My very first washer in the US.

It is a 1.6cf Magic Chef. There may be lots of info on this washer there which is always helpful when your looking at a washer...the guys over there are real pros when it comes to washers.

I think the guy has had it a year now and loves it.

My thoughts are because you say your main concern is that it can wash a full size comforter or at least a full size blanket. I figure those guys can answer that for sure.

Ah, I see! So that guy was very happy with his 1.6 cu ft Magic Chef. It survived a year in a hotel room, a long distance move stuffed in the back seat of a car with stuff in and piled on top of it, and 40 consecutive loads of a neighbor's laundry on top of his normal use.

Sounds good. I wonder if the compact dryer will stack on the 2.1 cu ft washer?

2 things about the Magic Chef compact combo are that you can't use bleach in it, and the manual has this weird blurb about not washing anything that has cooking oil on it (so no washing of dishclothes apparently) and it tells you to HANDWASH your whites. Seriously? That's pretty useless. So I'm less than enthused about it after all, especially if the compact dryer will stack on the compact washer.

My sister has the 2.1 cu ft Magic Chef washer. I've put regular size blankets (twin, but might take larger). I didn't read the manual, but there's nothing remarkable about it that would keep you from being able to wash kitchen towels or whites. My sister and I put everything in that thing. She used it for cloth diapers at one point. I don't l know about bleach.

I don't know if they still make them, but I also have a 15 year old 24"x24" spacemaker something (GE?) portable washer. It will take full size comforters.

But the op wants less than 2cf..think she said 1.6. Unless I made that up lol

Craigslist that's where I got mine....

There was talk of the 2.1, so I added my 2 cents :). I don't know what the 1.6 could take, but usually there are youtube videos demonstrating such things, might be worth checking out.
