I agree. I cover crop most beds, a few of them with daikon, and I can't really smell it unless I stick my nose close to the ground. If you have dense soil you will be very happy with the results. The earthworms like to be around, it is not only the large root but also a lot of greenery, all going to the worms. I toss in some leaves as well to have a better green-brown balance. I buy the seed from Urban Farmer. You can plant under existing taller plants in August to improve efficiency. you may add oats as well, very mycorrhizal, produces a lot of greenery, and it too dies in winter.

Could be the plant protein causing the smell. I would bury them.

I have planted the Groundhog variety of tillage radishes a few times. Groundhog grows larger and longer than most Daikon types and are pretty tasty in the fall but there are better varieties if you want to pickle, ferment, or eat some fresh. They do give off some odor during a warm spell in the winter but as noted it does not seem to travel too far. By spring all you have left are some deep 1-3" diameter holes, stems, and radish carcasses. They do seem to clog up the tiller tines a bit if tilled in but not nearly as bad as things like Rye grass or Buckwheat.

Most brassicas smell when they are decomposing. Nothing worse than cabbage or collards if abandoned in the spring. A field of them can be quite offensive. The trick is to to turn them under before decay sets in.

farmer, I think that the key word here is 'a field'. Garden areas of them have never stunk for me that I have discerned,

Also many of the radish cover crop planters are no till and do not want to 'turn them under'.

Also it is cold and wet up here at such times.
