This was more than just a kitchen remodel - it included about a third of our first floor! We had a lot of space to work with - about 800 square feet so we decided to make the bathroom smaller, while retaining a shower, and added a pantry - a godsend! Before we were storing back-up food in the bathroom closet! We then put in a 4' x 10' island in the center of the kitchen using verde marinade granite as the surface. We already had the range and fridge, but moved them to accommodate the new layout.

The perimeter counters in the kitchen are honed black slate from Camara Slate (backsplashes have since been installed). Cabinets are natural cherry from Decora (had a great experience with HomeDepot). Floors were the original oak, but refinished. Pantry, bathroom and mudroom (hall) floors are in black slate. Pantry cabinets are Decora as well. Island lights and ceiling light over the table are from Hubbardton Forge.

All in all we love the new spaces. The kitchen easily accommodates three people working at once. We are still awaiting the back deck being finished off with a screen porch, but already we have so much more natural light. Storage space has been increased dramatically and I love having dishes in drawers! Three sinks seemed excessive, but the coffee station is in the pantry and it's great to have the sink there. We use the sink on the island as a prep-sink, and the main Orca is so nice!

I learned so much from other Houzz'ers! Thanks for all the input along the way and for the inspiration from other projects. Once we get the deck/porch finished I'll update with more photos. And, if I can ever get the back hall clear I'll show you the new mudroom furniture!

Beautiful! I really like your choices, particularly the marinace granite. Interesting that you started with the classic work triangle but really made it much more useful by moving things around.

Okay, I was perusing tile everywhere and had already decided on the flat pebbles which we put in our master shower. Then I came across this site: Tiles with Style.

I'm an avid fly-fisher and just knew I had to have them. Got 5 to start and the puppy picked the package up and promptly dropped it - breaking all but one! Re-ordered 5 more and the tile guy was able to use some of the broken ones. I laid them out to make it look like they're swimming down the drain. You can't see them from the door to the room, so they're a hidden surprise! Glad you like - I do too!
