You have such eclectic taste - but there's absolutely no cohesion whatsoever ! Start by thinning out things - organise things of similar style and group them together, of similar pattern - but try and buy new things that 'go' with other stuff that you have ! Otherwise this is just going to get worse. I'm sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear ....

Your furniture is heavy looking so it doesn't go with the light weight looking table. Then the pillows ate so many different unconnected patterns.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I know this is not an impossible task and I don't plan on moving any time soon. So, I need more suggestions to get my place looking lovely! Pics, paint,rearranging, etc., would really help. I just purchased the couch, so that's definitely staying. I like the rug (that too, is staying), although I can place it in one of the bedrooms. I can move the bookcase, (not sure where) and the only reason the side table is there, is b/c I hv to kp my laptop plugged in. So it's convenient in that spot when I'm sitting on the couch. I can lose some of the pillows and place them on my settee in my bedroom. I can sell the pouf or put it in another rm. The last pic I attached were just random paintings I printed out. However, they are a bit dark and I have no immediate intentions on purchasing them.

I need help working what I have, that would be great! & any pics would definitely help, I am a very visual person. Oh--and I like neutrals--grey, brown (walnut), blue. Not a big fan of pinks, purple, orange. I'm just opening up to color, so I like to use color in the accessories and not the staple pieces.

I also thought I was doing okay with the colors. I thought the chevron pillows went well with the rug. I thought the grey pillows were ok with the couch and the yellow/green in them went with the yellow pillow. The yellow & grey pillows are the same design. The other pillows match one another as well. But, like I said--I can lose some of them. I think I'd like to kp the grey, chevron and yellow pillows and maybe add color in other places in the rooms.

I suggest an area rug and a coffee and curtains to pull itall together.

I'm so grateful for the pic @betsyweisberg, especially since a lot of the elements are similar to mine. (the couch, rug, bare walls and the gold on the table. I even considered purchasing a lamp like the one in the pic, but I have a ceiling fan in my living room area, that I can't take down. :( Anyway, this look is something worth considering. I'm excited to see more possibilities :D

Add some chairs? I would have the notebook paper drawings pictured above enlarged on 2 canvases and place over the sofa between the windows! They're great. I like your place and I think the rug looks good under your dining table. I don't think I'd bother painting just put your money and energy in to things you can take with you when you move.

I know that you said you really like the dining set, but it's detracting from the "global" feel of the room. Here are a couple of ideas for tables and chairs that I think would look good in your space. First time attaching photos so please forgive me if they are sized wrong

Dinning Area:
in your dining area you have 3 windows. print out black bold letter words that you would like to have! and place them in frames and hang them above the window!!! YOU do need a center piece for your table, place mats if you wanted to go to the extreme have your dinerware set out. lighting is extremely!!!!!!! important and can set the mood. you can take what you have out and place a modern lighting fixture. its super easy to install yourself. and doesn't cost or take much long. if you dont want to get rid of your bookshelf you can always paint it white to match thee rug you have.


Living Room:
you can also bring life into the room by adding an indoor plant on your end table.
remember your place is a reflection of yourself. don't hesitate to make decisions.
if you like something work with it. you can always paint rugs and pillows yourself SO that way you dont spend too much and just getting rid of what you have. the couch could use a throw over blanket so when you want to get cozy. you can just grab it.
WALLS: a gold mirror and curtains will also make a world of a difference and give it that warm welcoming home feel.
however if you don't want a mirror you can always pick up a picture AND blow it up and center it between thee 2 windows you have in your living area. now, the pillows are gorgeous!!!!! but since its over crowding the couch. you could just pick which ones you like the most and leave there, then put the others aside or for another bedroom.

I think that the white blinds also need to go! What about these two choices for wood blinds? Darker one is from Target, lighter one is from JC Penney. If you go with a simple valance in a solid color (pull from one of your pillows maybe) over the top, that would look nice when the blinds are up.

Since you're renting I'd hesitate to purchase a bunch of blinds or curtains. You'd also have the issue of where to store the others. As you get the art on the walls and a rug for the sofa the other features of the space will have less importance.

Rugs for couch area...

If you don't want to do blinds, since those are window size specific, what about curtain panels? Those can be reused later in your next place. These soft lime green are from World Market and they are only $60 per pair. I think it could make a lot of impact in your space. The white blinds are detracting from the room, imo.

I do think it would be worth it to replace the light fixture over the dining table as well...easily done. Store the one that is there now in a closet or something until you move and then switch them back and take yours with you. It needs to be one that is hung lower and has some style to it...Even if you go "junkin" one day at a flea market or something and keep your eyes open for a chandelier. If it's one of those old ugly ones, you can spray paint it a cool color to go with your other stuff!

I also think adding some curtains to your living room windows would add a lot of warmth and height to this room (hang them near the ceiling). Pick one of your favorite colors from one of your pillows. You'll need to pull out your sectional a foot or so to allow the curtains to hang properly but this would give you the opportunity to add a narrow sofa table behind the sofa if you wanted. This table could be centered between the two windows and give you another flat service to add lamps and/or other accessories.

A suggestion for artwork between the two windows would be to place 4 black and white photography pictures together using the Ribba frames from IKEA. Here is a link to a site that was done using these frames but done on an entire wall. The photos don't necessarily have to be of people, they could be photos you take of nature or buildings or maybe even elephants!! LOL! Of course, you'll notice how good they look on a wall that has been painted too! I think the black and white pictures will help coordinate with some of the black that you have in your area rug and pillows. The Ribba frames are square (I'm sure other stores may carry square frames too) so if you hang the 4 pictures fairly close together it would form one larger square which would mimic a large piece of artwork and be very dramatic.

I do agree with some of the other comments about incorporating some wicker or rattan elements into your rooms. This will give your home some great texture and help with that feeling of world travel. You could add rattan or wicker through some new dining room chairs, blinds, baskets, frames, tables, placemats or even lamps. You could stack 2 large wicker type chests that have flat tops and use it as an end table.

Also, if you are not crazy about the color of your dining room table base, there are lots of spray paints on the market that mimic all kinds of metals should you ever want to change it.

p.s. I think you should frame your art you have above and use a VERY wide mat to surround them with a thin frame...you can use those in between the windows. Art is important and should be something you love. I was actually thinking a floating shelf there with your framed art on it or hung on the wall slightly above it. :)

I would make a few simple changes I would begin with framing the pictures that you have probably in a gold or black frame to accent the colors that already exist. Probably add a center piece to your table, for example candles sticks work well, they're simple. I would place the pictures between the window to give a focal point. You have a lot of pillows on the couch that do offer a comforting look. I would use the colors from my pictures, and get some fabric and recover to bring things together. I do like the hanging lamp shown above it would go nicely. I think it would look great over the table where your book shelf is. I would probably move the book shelf to another location. I like to match woods, so maybe you have something similar in another space. Just take it from that particular wall. The most expensive change I would make is to add a coffee table, and dinning room chairs. I would keep an eye open at flea markets, Big Lots, Target, but you get the jest of it. I think you have a good foundation, then you can go from there. This will give you a good sense of cohesion, yet allow you the room tobe eclecticandglobal. I definitely want to add curtains. I have two wicker square basket thingy's that I can incorporate...maybe. I'll take a pic and you tell me what you think. All of your pictures are great!! Like I said previously, I am a bit nervous about painting, but more importantly--I don't have any help. But I know it would make such a huge difference. Hmm...in the meantime, I need to work things out with white walls.

I hesitate a bit on the coffee table, only b/c I wonder if it'll crowd the space. But, I can definitely try it--maybe use the wicker things. Glass dining rm table and wood chairs--I'm also a lil' hesitant about, although I did mention Wishbone style chairs, lol. When I purchased the dining rm table--I was so caught up on the funky base design, and I thought having a glass table might keep the room "light", that I just went for it. It was at a thrift store and I didn't want to leave and come back the next day and it would be gone. But I do like the two pics above~sigh~

Sorry it took so long. Ok so here are some additional pics from different views of the room as well as other things I have-- that may or may not add to the living or dining rm. Maybe a color, pattern, style or texture that I should add with the specific item pictured or something similar for a future purchase. I know someone mentioned wicker or rattan. Maybe I can use the ones in the pic as a coffee table or side tables. All of things in the bedroom will be removed and replaced with an actual bedroom set, so I could definitely use them in the living or dining space or somewhere else in my house. I think the bookcase is in a good spot. Can't see why it should be moved.
The wicker baskets are nice beside your bed. And I love the blue and red bedding and rug combination. You have lots of pieces of art, but none of it is up on the walls? Afraid of hanging them and it not looking good? Okay, so here's an idea. Make an art arrangement on the floor. Cut out pieces of paper to the size of the different pieces. Hang those pieces on the wall with painters tape (you can make that less tacky by sticking it to your clothes first, so it doesn't stick to the wall too much if you're afraid of damaging the paint on the wall). You can see if the arrangement works, adjust heights, get used to something on the wall, and then decide to hang the paintings.

I love the funky chest that holds your CD's. However, it looks a bit cluttered, which is a shame.
The wood cabinet with the glass door could be the perfect CD storage unit? If they fit in there? And you could paint it. If the CD's fit in that cabinet (fingers crossed), just put them on their sides, not stacked like you have them now.

Hey again, I see a piece of art or canvas on top of the book shelf. Try moving it to the bare wall near the dining table and hang it so that the middle of the pic is 60" from the floor. I mentioned before having the very unique drawings you printed out turned into canvases. I thought it was a great idea ; ) so I wanted to mention it again. Here's something else that looked like your room...

I like the way the geometric rug pulls in the dark sofa color.....I feel the addition of at least two dark upholstered host chairs would help balance out the room....look at world market chairs, I think they have a round back black linen that might look nice....and they are having a sale this week end....the addition of some great prints, the larger the better.....good luck
