No, I won't be seeing them in person--I'm still peeved at Anza Borrego over a policy they enacted in 2010. Would love to see photos though!

What policy is that? We went in 2005 (I think) to see wildflowers and would like to go back, if we can schedule it. We had to go to Texas (Austin) last week to settle some family matters, and so it may be difficult for my brother, although not necessarily for me. Bluebonnets were just starting to bloom in Texas as we were leaving. The flowers themselves are better in Texas, but the setting here is more dramatic.

How long will they be blooming in Anza Borrego?

Lars, it actually started closer to 2007 and concerned geocaching. Other divisions were willing to work with Groundspeak to mutual benefit, but AB land managers were, and remain, especially nasty and unfair.

I went last Sunday, March 5th. There were flowers in the area, but not yet anything approaching a "super bloom." I was a bit too early? I could see many more buds than open flowers.

NBC San Diego morning news said they would broadcast a feature showing the flowers. I think it was this Friday 17th around 6am.

I tried to book a hotel in Borrego Springs for this week-end, but nothing was available within 60 miles of downtown BS! So I booked a hotel in Indio (the closest I could find) and we will be there this week-end. We'll still be an hour from the park, I think, but much closer and with less traffic than from L.A. We're in Westchester near the beach, and so we're not that close to Anza Borrego - at least not close enough for a day trip. We should be able to spend all day Saturday in the park this way, and then we can stop in Palm Springs on Sunday on the way back. I don't need another trip to the Outlet Mall in Cabazon, however.

I heard from someone who went this last Sunday. Take your patience along with your camera. The crowded roads are slow moving. Arrive early before dawn to get in and park. Most cars left as the mid day heat arrived. Last I looked, you could still get a bare bones cabin in the state park for around 60 dollars ( no heat, no running water ). All the little places outside the park were booked or double the prices. One had a clothes optional policy!

Rangers are checking to make sure you have enough water with you.

The flowers are coming into peak bloom and the hills are green. There are also large CA poppy bloom around Temecula according to him.

I'm not looking forward to traffic in the park, but I guess that it will be there. The L.A. Times said that people were coming from as far away as "Canada, Minnesota, Chicago" to the visitors' center, but I imagine that those people had already planned a trip to SoCal without consideration for the super bloom.

It looks like weather is going to be in the 90s, and so I'll make sure we have plenty of water. I was planning to take a picnic lunch for Saturday, so that we can stay in the park all day. I'll also take sunscreen and a couple of hats. I'm hoping to get some good photos. We left Texas a week ago Saturday, just when the wildflowers there were starting to bloom. The wildflowers in Texas are more colorful and varied, but the ones here grow on more interesting landscapes.

I was out at Superstition (https://www.blm.gov/style/medialib/blm/ca/pdf/elcentro/maps.Par.46339.File.dat/blmlands_superstitionmtn.pdf) this past weekend and did see some flowers. I have seen some better blooms in the past (probably 6-10 years ago) Here are a couple examples I took with my phone:

Went Friday and Saturday - no problems with traffic whatsoever!

The park web site is being constantly updated, and as of today (March 20) has spectacular photos from visitors. Traffic was not as bad (according to their report) as it was the week-end before, and I think the flowers were probably better this past week-end. Perhaps next week-end will be a bit cooler, in case you haven't gone yet.

I went Mon and Tues. It was worth it. It was busy but nothing horrible. Palm canyon trail had flowing water still in the little stream close to the palm tree oasis. You need to be early to park at the trail head in the campground. No problem at all on Henderson Canyon road to see the yellow carpets of flowers. We saw the white lilies and purple sand verbena at the end of Di Giorgio Road and more sand verbena and some pretty white flowers along Di Giorgio heading back to town. There were purple lupines further down Henderson Canyon road around peg leg road and just beyond on the highway. The area around the Visitors center is pretty too with small yellow and white flowers and many pink cactus flowers just opening up.

I would say it will be good for a week yet because we did not see many spent flowers on the plants although the little catepillars are eating as fast as they can out there. I would have liked to go farther in on Di Giorgio to see some of the coyote creek area, the water and other kinds of plants and flowers but you need a four wheel drive and something with higher clearance than we had. I am grateful for what we did see. I think you could see plenty in a day. The winding Montezuma pass road, S22 ,that enters the park near the Visitor center has beatutiful yellow flowers the whole way down. Going out on Yaqui Pass road we saw more yellow flowers plus many pink cactus flowers and some other flowers we hadnt seen.

The map below shows the flowering areas in green. In Borrego Springs on Palm Canyon drive are two shops with better maps. One is a nature center shop and the other is the state park shop next to the mini market and a volunteer sits outside at the table to help you find things you want to see ( there's a tip jar :) ) Center Market is good little market with healthy and organic options and a deli counter on the other side of Palm Canyon drive. Gas is 3.50 and up in Borrego Springs.

Dawn and dusk are pretty magical. I did not find the day heat too bad. We sat on the patio in the shade by a fountain for lunch and it was fine. After dark, we walked in the campground and listened to owls hoot. There is also a small pond there near palm canyon trailhead and frogs sing as the sun goes down. Ill put my pictures up soon. I also liked the big sea serpent sculpture.

Hillsides of California Poppies are right along the 15 as we drove from Temecula to Corona. There were people all over taking pictures there. It would be on the right side on the tall slopes before you reach the Corona area. Temecula to Anza on Hwy 79 had some pretty hillside flowers too. All those rolling hills are beautiful green coming into the warner springs area.

There are youtube clips of people taking theirJeeps on the rough trails to give you an idea of the conditions off the paved areas in Anza Borrego. The sandy areas are good places to get stuck too, so look for firm places to park along side of the paved roads.

We drove from Corona to Temecula on I-15 on Friday morning and did not notice that many poppies - some, but not overwhelming - it might be better now. Hwy 79 was a bit better, I think, but a friend told me that there are a lot of poppies blooming north of Malibu right now. Anyway, it is nice to see green hills.

Antelope Valley looks like a good place to see poppies now also.

maybe it was because I saw them in the afternoon sun and they were more opened up by then? This was listed as Walker Canyon when I looked it up on the list of poppy sites to visit. Here's someones picture of Antelope Valley for inspiration

Those green hills are so different than the usual color! Green is everywhere on the hills, the ground. Amazing!

Wow beautiful yellow!

There was an intense patch of yellow mustard along the 57 near Diamond Bar a few weeks ago. It was so bright but not safe to stop along the fwy for a picture.

These pictures are even better because of the ocean.
