If you are near an Ethan Allen, we have designers that will bring samples out and make suggestions as well as quote, order and install. I agree with the idea of a lighter rug and repositioning drapes off to the sides to allow more light. An end table with a lamp, chair with a cool straight line to help create a 'conversation circle' and a tree for some organic interest would all be easy additions :) Good luck!!
