Why skip the new window grilles/grids/muntins?

I'm seeing people all over my neighborhood rip out their old windows with muntins and replace with windows that have none. For those of you who have undergone such a change, why did you opt out of muntins? Is it a huge cost factor? Or just about the more open view? To me, very few homes, usually more contemporary or modern, can really pull off a polished look without muntins, and it usually leaves a traditional home looking a little odd without them. And yet people are doing it all over. I'm just curious as to the thought process.
