Need help: cover for outdoor wormpit.

What materials or conformation have you had experience with?

I have been growing worms in basement about 10 years with great success, but I want to get them outdoors. I have a pit dug in the ground, in the shade, next to a building. Winter lows to about 5 F, summer in 90s.

I can't lift (or slide) anything heavy, but I want something to protect against extreme temperature and too much rain, (which rarely comes, but it comes). Squirrels abound, and I have to block them out as well.

I intend transition in spring or early summer. I keep a pile of cut leaves nearby, and I have plenty of burlap bags. Advice, please. Thank you!
