Window Grids or No Grids

We are replacing our windows. Should we keep the window grids or not? We also plan on removing the shutters.

We also plan on thinning the landscaping so the house will be more visible.

I think on some windows the grids can be removed if you decide you don't like them. ??

    Always use grids.

I have removed the shutters, lowered some of the hedges and darkened the trim. I would keep the grids.

Thank you so much for that editing. I especially was worried the garage windows would be too plain w/o grids.

do the grids inside the windows if possible, (that is, they are inside, outside, and in the glass sandwich) the applied/removable ones can look a bit off. literally.

i had them at my previous house. as time went on they just didnt look so good, didnt fit properly, no idea what the current owners have chosen to do with them.

you could do them just on top, too.

I love to look outside while sitting and have an unobstructed view.

When we had our previous home build all of the front windows had grids in them and they gave the house more character just by adding them ,we sold our house and the next owners remove them , when I saw the house a while later the feeling that I got was that the house lost its charm , its a bit like us you see...when we dress up and add that extra piece of jewelry it completes the look .

Depends upon the style of the house, on your house they probably should stay, but, if it were mine I'd remove them. I prefer a simpler look, unobstructed views.

Depends on the style of the house. When we replaced our windows we elected not to have any. The house seems to get so much more light and I like the unobstructed view.

I feel like something is missing without them, at least on the front of the house. You can always do grids on just the top of the window.

I like grids as well. Large windows look so plain without them. Not sure how they interfere with window treatment choices though.

I'm a fan of grids, too. The front of our house looks so bare without them...

I feel like the responses so far have not considered the how you would achieve the "grid look." Unfortunately, any reasonable approximation of traditional divided light windows with muntins is very expensive. It's one of those things where you get what you pay for and there are no substitutes.

It's a pretty traditional house, and I think windows with muntins, or a reasonably facsimile, like simulated divided light, would be optimal.

But, IMO, snap in or between the glass grids scream "FAKE!!!!"

I would much rather see a decently trimmed, well chosen window with no grids than either snap-on or between the glass fake grids.

Now, simulated divided light are fake too. But, IMO, they are convincing fakes.

That said, this is all just my opinion, and even other people who agree with me don't seem have the same visceral reaction I have to snap ons and between the pane windows.

Obviously, it's your house and the only opinion that really matters is yours. But my suggestion is to really look around at the range of window choices, and even look at windows in price ranges you might never consider just so you really understand what you are choosing between.
