Area Rug Help!?

I have a new, very dark grey couch. Beige Walls and beige carpets.

I have never bought a big area rug before, and I am super lost on the process. I know I want a big one (7X9 as the absolutely smallest) but as far as texture, color, shape.... I am at a loss. See the couch with the boring walls and carpet.

I am pretty simple. Small paterns maybe, but I am pretty boring in general. If you can provide pictures with ideas/similar colors it would be the best! I am horrible at picturing things.

I swear I am not normally THIS high maintenance :).

Thanks!

it's a lot of leather. I'd look to counterpoint it(if you can say so) in terms of texture. I'd go really soft. Probably shag rug-it's also has this modern feel about it..will quietly work with the sofa, taking off some of its visual weight, and not quarreling with it too much.

I'd add throw pillows and throws as well..same principle-different, softer looking texture. knitted, linen, velvet.

colors..shags are usually one color. I'd check on that though. If I find an image for you I'd post it. I'd go for something lighter, or if you love a certain color like say, green-you can do that. Greens are easy on eyes since we're used to be surrounded by them so much.. so if you want to get away from achromatic but still stay within your comfort zone you can choose something like green. Or perhaps warmer blue. Something you see a lot in nature. So even though it will be bright-it will read as very natural to you anyway

But for pillows /throws I'd venture into a pattern. Since you're not comfortable with commitments..yet.. lol...look into something that's easy on you. can be geometric..or global which is usually sort of more fluid geometry..pillows and throws can marry all the colors in the room, another reason they're so cool(the first one is they're really useful and cozy)

Shape..rectangle of course.

I'd get a tray for that ottoman..which you're probably going to do anyway:) Trays are a) very useful b) pretty

Do you have an IKEA nearby or a HomeGoods?

Personally, I like the IKEA Stockholm rug, but

you could also go colorful.

here's shag in sable..as an example. you don't go away much in terms of color..you do go with different texture though

https://www.wayfair.com/Safavieh-Paris-Silver-Area-Rug-FV17241.html

here's a bit of geometry..this one is beige and ivory..brightening things a bit and introducing pattern but in a subtle way

https://www.wayfair.com/House-of-Hampton-Alice-Beige-Ivory-Area-Rug-HOHM1465.html

gray and ivory..repeating your sofa and floor lamp

https://www.wayfair.com/Brayden-Studio%C2%AE-Sewell-Moroccan-Ivory-Gray-Area-Rug-BRSD7942.html

much much bolder-but you have all your colors inside:)

(i try to post the ones with the most positive reviews too)

cream and gray..here, i like a very very subtle pattern

https://www.wayfair.com/Varick-Gallery%C2%AE-Sabang-Cream-Gray-Area-Rug-VKGL4381.html

light warm blue..if you want to introduce colors

https://www.wayfair.com/Mercury-Row%C2%AE-Virgo-Light-Blue-Area-Rug-MCRR3694.html

bold and happy green plus blue plus black..probably too bold but just to show you

https://www.wayfair.com/Latitude-Run-Pictor-Green-Area-Rug-LATR6959.html

gloomy and sophisticated green

https://www.wayfair.com/Chandra-Rugs-Flemish-Shag-Green-Area-Rug-CUG9157.html

interestingly striped green. they have several with this different shape thing -change in texture? -going on

Wayfair is known as a source of cheap and poorly made stuff..but the truth is-it's a giant..I think they bought all and everybody and everything they could. They carry things in every price point. Their service is usually great.

I m not rooting for them or something since I dislike the concept itself..but it's a nice place to check the range of products..they've got a lot. It's 50 pages or so of just shags and flokati.

omg Chelsea you exaggerate. really, really. you made me blush . now my cheeks match my pajama pants. wearing red today. lol

(i'll be fine i guess. falling down is hard but am used to it))))

i love nosoccermom's suggestions..my reasoning for a shag was because you've got carpets. which to me makes more sense for venturing into more textural..difference? you kinda say "ok i've got carpets? I pile on it even more so"

wood would give more possibilities of course-flat-weave, sisal, you name it.

I think you need some pattern with all those large solid surfaces. Is this too wild?

@nosoccermom thank you for the additional sites! I am nervous to purchase something that big online (no idea why, I am an Amazon Prime addict, like an actual problem). Have you had any issues with doing it?

@nosoccermom I am good with those patterns! I really liked both of them. I think I am leaning for Shag with a pattern. @aprilneverends

@Olychick this comment made me laugh out loud. You can barely even see him! I WOULD LOVE TO! If only he would let me control that aspect haha. He wants a dark grey couch, with a dark grey ottoman, with a dark grey tray, and a dark grey painting. IT IS EXHAUSTING, especially when I don't have a ton of skill in this area and my response is 'I am not sure WHAT we need, but it is NOT that babe'.

I've only ordered from esalerugs. They do offer free returns.

What others have suggested is to buy the smallest rug size to see whether you like it before ordering the actual size you need.
